About the role

Telesat · Onsite

Telesat (Nasdaq and TSX: TSAT) is a leading global satellite operator, providing reliable and secure satellite-delivered communications solutions worldwide to broadcast, telecommunications, corporate and government customers for over 55 years.  Backed by a legacy of engineering excellence, reliability and industry-leading customer service, Telesat has grown to be one of the largest and most successful global satellite operators.

Telesat Lightspeed, our revolutionary Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, scheduled to begin service in 2027, will revolutionize global broadband connectivity for enterprise and Government users by delivering a combination of high capacity, security, resiliency and affordability with ultra-low latency and fiber-like speeds. Telesat is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and has offices and facilities around the world.

The company’s state-of-the-art Satellite fleet consists of 12 GEO satellites, the Canadian payload on ViaSat-1 and one LEO 3 demonstration satellite.  For more information, follow Telesat on X and LinkedIn or visit www.telesat.com

Telesat is launching a state-of-the-art satellite constellation of highly advanced satellites in low-earth-orbit that will seamlessly integrate with terrestrial networks. The global network will deliver fiber quality throughput anywhere on earth.

We are growing quickly and are currently in need of Senior System Engineering Specialist to join our System Solutions team.

Reporting to the Director, Systems Solutions, the Senior System Engineering Specialist will lead the evaluation and definition of next-generation Lightspeed system capabilities, with particular focus on air-interface evolution, wireless network architecture, and advanced satellite payload capabilities. The successful candidate will perform system-level trade studies and define future architectures enabling enhanced performance, improved interoperability, support for low-cost user terminals, and integration with emerging standards such as DVB-RCS2 and 3GPP NTN, while maintaining backward compatibility with the existing constellation.

This role is a Hybrid position where the resource is required to work onsite 4 days weekly.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and propose optimal evolution of the overall architecture considering new waveforms (DVB-RCS2 NGSO, 3GPP NTN) and advanced payload capabilities.
  • Lead quantitative trade-space assessments evaluating capacity, latency, terminal complexity, spectrum efficiency, satellite payload complexity, interoperability, and overall system cost.
  • Develop a solution which will provide seamless handovers, backwards compatibility to first generation, maximum interoperability with other systems and facilitate the support of low-cost flat panel antennas.
  • Compare and demonstrate system performance for different technological approaches addressing commercial requirements, including low-latency, high-capacity services, hosted payload and space relay services, inter-constellation connectivity, and other emerging architectures that support new business opportunities.
  • Interface with other Telesat groups regarding system engineering, satellite payload and ground segment characteristics, definitions of performance metrics, performance evaluations, and regulatory compliance and associated requirements.
  • Develop Concept of Operations (ConOps) associated with new architectures, configurations, services, and define high level requirements for the implementation.
  • Support and guide detailed system performance studies around PHY/MAC evolution, scheduling/resource allocation, mobility procedures, and link adaptation.
  • Prepare and manage feature development roadmap in collaboration with commercial and engineering teams.
  • Develop technical documentation and reports.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality technical presentations supporting the delivery of solutions.
  • Education and Experience required

  • B. Sc. in Electrical, Computer or System Engineering and a minimum of 14 years of relevant experience in satellite communications or other large communication systems.
  • Deep understanding of wireless communications theory and air-interface design.
  • Experience with 3GPP NTN and/or DVB standards.
  • Experience performing link-level and system-level trade-off analyses.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools used for wireless or satellite system performance evaluation.
  • Good understanding of architecture of large wireless communication systems in terms of mobility management, QoS, resource orchestration, and network access control.
  • Additional Skills required

  • Knowledge of spectrum sharing, interference management, and regulatory constraints for NGSO systems.
  • Understanding of LEO constellation dynamics and their impact on radio resource management.
  • Creative problem-solver with thorough attention to detail.
  • Highly collaborative team-player who can quickly earn the confidence of co-workers and teammates.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • An aptitude for and interest in complex technology.
  • Fluent in English, written and oral.
  • Some travel may be required.
