ABOUT THE ROLE

The African Leadership University is currently hiring facilitators for its in-person Self-Directed Learning Skills Lab. The role is designed for an education professional with strong experience in higher education instruction, facilitation, curriculum implementation, learning management systems, digital learning tools, and student academic support.
The successful candidate will facilitate in-person sessions, update designed lesson plans, curate self-work and student deliverables, and support Year 1 students in developing strong self-directed learning skills. The role requires someone who can work across physical and digital learning environments, ensuring that students are supported both inside the classroom and through structured online learning platforms.

The facilitator will also be responsible for managing learning materials on Canvas and ensuring that all SDL content, lesson plans,assessments, student resources, and deliverables are properly migrated onto Canvas before the start of in-person sessions. The candidate should therefore have a strong working knowledge of online learning tools and products,
including learning management systems, digital collaboration tools, content creation platforms, assessment tools, and student engagement technologies. The candidate should also have a clear understanding of the ethical and appropriate use of artificial intelligence in academic settings. This includes awareness of academic integrity, responsible AI use, appropriate student guidance on AI-supported learning, and the ability to help students use AI tools in ways that strengthen rather than replace their thinking, research, writing, and
problem-solving skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and update engaging self-directed learning activities, lesson plans, student-facing materials, self-work tasks, deliverables, and entrepreneurial learning content connected to ALU’s 14 Global Challenges and Opportunities.
  • Ensure that SDL learning experiences are coherent, practical, outcomes-aligned, and responsive to the needs of Year 1 students.
  • Work closely with Foundational Learning Coaches and Specialisation Coaches to identify students’ learning needs, gaps in self-directed learning skills, and opportunities to improve programme delivery.
  • Support the implementation, adoption, and effective use of Canvas LMS for SDL students, including course organisation, content migration, learning materials, assignments, feedback processes, and basic learning analytics.
  • Apply knowledge of Canvas and at least one other learning management system, such as Moodle, Blackboard, Google Classroom or a similar platform.
  • Use relevant online learning tools and education technology products to support facilitation, assessment, collaboration, student engagement, feedback, analytics, and digital learning.
  • Use G Suite/Google Workspace tools, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Forms, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Google Meet, to design materials, collect feedback, coordinate workflows, manage schedules, track student progress, and produce reports.
  • Review and modify learning materials, assessments, rubrics, student instructions, and other programme components to ensure alignment with internal quality assurance requirements.
  • Develop analytical reports on SDL Lab performance using student feedback, Canvas analytics, attendance data, assessment performance, participation trends, and facilitator observations.
  • Regularly review Canvas and other learning analytics reports to identify students who may require intervention from LEAP, the Writing Centre, academic coaches, or other student support structures.
  • Hold office hours as needed to provide targeted coaching, feedback, and academic support for students who need help with planning, reading, writing, time management, research, reflection, academic discipline, or independent learning.
  • Identify relevant databases, datasets, online resources, case studies, and learning materials that can support self-directed learning, entrepreneurial leadership, and evidence-informed student work.
  • Support any other reasonable duties assigned by the line manager from time to time.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in any subject area. A background in education, curriculum studies, instructional design, learning sciences, social sciences, entrepreneurship, leadership, technology-enhanced learning, or a related field will be an advantage.
  • At least two years of experience working in an educational institution, preferably in higher education, student learning support, academic facilitation, curriculum delivery, programme coordination, or learning design.
  • Strong background in higher education instruction, including experience facilitating university-level learning, supporting first-year students, designing learning activities, giving feedback, and helping students develop academic and professional skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with students, facilitators, academic teams,institutional stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Strong documentation capabilities, including the ability to write accurate lesson plans, student instructions, meeting notes, reports, process documents, feedback summaries, schedules, and implementation records.
  • Knowledge of at least two LMS platforms, including Canvas and one other platform such as Moodle, Blackboard, or a similar system.
  • Comfort using online learning tools and education technology products to support facilitation, assessment, collaboration, feedback, student engagement, and learning analytics.
  • Good understanding of ethical and appropriate use of artificial intelligence in academic settings, including academic integrity, responsible AI use, AI-supported learning, citation practices, student guidance, and the risks of over-reliance on AI-generated work.
  • Ability to guide students in using AI tools appropriately for brainstorming, feedback, revision, research support, and learning enhancement while maintaining academic honesty and independent thinking.
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to multitask, prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Strong interest in ALU’s 14 Global Challenges and Opportunities, with the ability to connect self-directed learning to entrepreneurship, leadership, and real-world problem-solving.

Preferable

  • A master’s degree in education, curriculum studies, instructional design, learning sciences, educational technology, higher education, leadership, entrepreneurship, social sciences, or another relevant field.
  • Demonstrated passion for education, modern learning theory, curriculum development, instructional design, learning experience design, or technology-enhanced learning.
  • Experience designing or facilitating courses that include self-directed learning, entrepreneurship, leadership, research skills, communication, academic writing, digital learning, project-based learning, or experiential learning.
