The Sedation & Recovery Nurse is part of the team that provides nursing care before, during, and after abortion, sterilization, and other minor gynecologic procedures. These procedures are conducted at the health center of assignment and performed in accordance with Planned Parenthood of Illinois’ policies, protocols, and procedures in the PPIL Medical Standards and Guidelines. The Sedation & Recovery Nurse works as a Recovery Room Nurse and a Supervised Sedation Professional and reports to the Procedural Abortion and Sedation Services Clinical Director
Essential Functions:

Participate in the counting and logging of all controlled substances consistent with PPIL’s Drug Control Policy.

Take personal responsibility to remain informed, current, and willing to follow the medical policies of the Board of Directors as stated in the PPIL Medical Standards and Guidelines concerning PAb provision and sedation.

Respond to the needs of the clinical team as requested by Health Center Leadership including, but not limited to:
-
maintaining medical records
-
maintaining an efficient and clean medical facility
-
Participate in staff training as needed and provide regular feedback to the Health Center Manager.

Willingness to travel to specified health centers to work as a Recovery Room Nurse or a Supervised Sedation Professional, based upon needs of the organization and staffing schedules.

Assists in the orientation, precepting, and on-going clinical support of nurses to include:
-
Training to provide nursing care to patients in PPIL's procedural service centers’ recovery rooms and the provision of moderate sedation in accordance with all Planned Parenthood of Illinois’ policies and protocols, OSHA/CLIA regulations.

Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to remain informed about PPIL protocols, policies, and procedures.

Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to PPIL core values of access, activism, care, confidentiality, diversity, excellence, integrity, respect, self-determination, and stewardship; practice these values in relations with internal and external customers.
Recovery room duties:
-
Provide nursing care to patients in PPIL’s health centers’ recovery room in accordance with all Planned Parenthood of Illinois policies and protocols, OSHA/CLIA regulations.

Assist providers with emergencies during clinic, screen patients with medical problems, and train staff in medical emergencies.

Participate in the follow up of abortion complications, where applicable, achieving an abortion medical occurrence rate of 1% or less.

Monitor medications/crash carts, inventory and logs and ensure proper functioning of equipment.

Accept individual and joint responsibility for, and participate in health center efforts to achieve:
-
annual plan (i.e. AB clients to goal)
-
abortion visits of 3 hours or less;
-
abortion medical occurrence rate of 1% or less as defined by the PPFA list of abortion occurrences;
-
attainment of annual health center fiscal goals in revenue, expenses, and contribution margin.
Sedation duties:
-
Under direct supervision of the procedural abortion physician of the day, who is the Non-anesthesiologist Sedation Practitioner, provide comprehensive pre-anesthetic assessment to all relevant patients consistent with the planned procedure.

Under direct supervision of the Non-anesthesiologist Sedation Practitioner, prepare drugs for administration at the beginning of each clinic session. Ensure that all syringes are properly labeled and that all vials are properly stored throughout the day. Ensure that each procedure room is stocked with all the necessary sedation-related supplies at the beginning of each day.

Place or supervise the placement of intravenous catheters for patients who wish to be sedated.

Under direct supervision of the Non-anesthesiologist Sedation Practitioner, provide anesthesia care in accordance with PPIL’s Medical Standards and Guidelines, including patient monitoring and the administration of sedative and analgesic mediations.

Under the direct supervision of the Non-anesthesiologist Sedation Practitioner and working with recovery room personnel, provide post-anesthesia care.
Other responsibilities:

Participate in agency-wide Quality Assurance and Risk Management Program, customer service and productivity goals
-
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education: A registered nurse, advanced practice nurse holding a current license in the State of Illinois, who has successfully completed or is willing to complete additional training to learn skills for administering and monitoring during intravenous sedation, up to and including moderate sedation. Must always have active ACLS certification throughout employment.
Experience: Previous experience in the provision of sedation in an outpatient setting or in an OB/GYN related field preferred but not required. Spanish speaking preferred but not required.
