This role is responsible for developing, optimizing, and modernizing SQL Server components within a high-availability Azure infrastructure while collaborating with cross-functional Agile teams to deliver scalable, high-performance database solutions supporting a microservices-based application architecture.

Job Description
The Senior Microsoft SQL Developer will play a key role in the modernization of VDOT's enterprise tolling transaction platform as it transitions to a modular, microservices-based architecture. Working as part of an Agile/Scrum development team, this position is responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining Microsoft SQL Server solutions hosted on Azure Virtual Machines while supporting both modernized and legacy database environments. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with solution architects, cloud engineers, .NET developers, API developers, testers, and project leadership to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing database solutions that support business-critical operations.
Responsibilities
Technical Duties
- Develop, maintain, and optimize advanced T-SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and database views.
- Perform SQL Server performance tuning, indexing optimization, and query optimization for high-volume enterprise applications.
- Modernize legacy SQL code, database objects, and schemas while maintaining compatibility with existing systems.
- Support the development of new database functionality aligned with a microservices-based architecture.
- Design and maintain scalable database models supporting modular application development.
- Support high-availability SQL Server environments utilizing Always On Availability Groups.
- Develop database migration scripts and assist with database modernization initiatives.
- Contribute SQL-related code changes through Azure DevOps and GitHub CI/CD pipelines.
Integration & Data Management
- Collaborate with .NET Core/C# development teams to optimize application data access and API integrations.
- Support database integration initiatives and data migration activities.
- Assist with SQL platform modernization efforts within Azure-hosted environments.
Security & Compliance
- Ensure database solutions align with PCI compliance requirements.
- Implement and support data retention policies and database security standards.
Collaboration
- Work closely with architects, cloud engineers, developers, testers, and project stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Participate actively in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Deliver assigned work within established sprint timelines while maintaining high quality standards.
Operational Support
- Maintain business-critical SQL Server environments supporting enterprise tolling operations.
- Troubleshoot database performance issues and provide ongoing production support as needed.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on scalability, maintainability, and platform reliability.

Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of overall IT experience.
- 7 years of SQL Server development experience in enterprise environments.
- 5 years of advanced T-SQL development experience, including query tuning and performance optimization.
- 5 years of experience developing in SQL Server on Azure environments.
- 5 years of hands-on experience supporting high-availability architectures using Always On Availability Groups.
- 5 years of experience modernizing database code and schemas, including legacy SQL support.
- 5 years of experience collaborating with .NET Core/C# development teams.
- 5 years of experience deploying SQL updates through Azure DevOps and GitHub CI/CD pipelines.
- 5 years of experience working effectively within Agile/Scrum teams.
- 5 years of experience modernizing SQL workloads in cloud-hosted environments.

Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of experience building ETL solutions using SSIS and Databricks.
- 5 years of knowledge of PCI compliance and database security requirements.
- 3 years of experience with Terraform or infrastructure-as-code supporting SQL deployments.
- 5 years of experience working with microservices architectures and domain-driven design.
- 5 years of knowledge of scaling strategies for high-transaction SQL environments.

This is a 1099 Contract opportunity.
Pay Rate: $70 – $90 per hour

- Hybrid work arrangement.
- On-site presence required 1 day per week.
