This position is within the Hearing and Vision Program of the Health Department located in St. Clair Shores

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt - overtime pursuant to Collective Bargaining Agreement or Human Resources and Labor Relations Policy

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP: Just cause subject to probationary period

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Schedules and performs hearing and vision screens for preschool and school-aged children. Completes paperwork according to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Macomb County protocol. Maintains communication and organization of all components with staff members. This position is considered as essential personnel for a public health emergency response per the State's Emergency Management Act 390 and Macomb County emergency Management Resolution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conducts hearing and vision screening for preschool and school-aged children.
Completes and submits reports yielding results of screening.
Assists with interpreting results to students and parents.
Provides referral information as determined by the results of screening.
Schedules hearing and vision screening with school personnel
Attend annual training as required by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Department (MDHHS)
Complies with Michigan Child Protection Law 1975, PA 238, MCL 722.621 as a mandated reporter.
Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education and Experience

  • Possession of a high school diploma or a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test
  • As a condition of employment, an employee in this classification must be qualified by the State of Michigan to conduct vision and/or hearing screenings within the first year of employment

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Previous experience working with children in an educational, recreational or volunteer capacity

  • Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Macomb County protocol
  • Health Insurance Privacy and Portability Act (HIPPA) knowledge and compliance
  • Health department policies and procedures

Skill in:

  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
  • Time Management and attention to detail
  • Analytical thinking when applying protocol to determine when medical referrals are warranted
  • Computer Skills in Word, Excel, and Google Platform Applications

Ability to:

  • Demonstrated decision-making ability and problem solving skills
  • Effectively speak, write and understand the English language
  • Adapt behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected situations
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other professionals, clients and the public
  • Conduct oneself with tact and courtesy
  • Make relatively complex mathematical computations rapidly and accurately
  • Maintain complex clerical records and prepare reports from such records
  • Organize and oversee the work of clerical employees
