HVAC Maintenance Technician

Maintain and repair all HVAC systems including plant building climate control, process ventilation, and supporting equipment to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance at the Texas City Acetyls site.

Accountability 1: Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE)

  • Comply with and actively promote the INEOS Life Saving Rules, the INEOS 20 Principles of Process and Behavioral Safety, and all site SHE requirements.
  • Perform HVAC maintenance and repair activities in a manner that protects personnel, equipment, and the environment.
  • Follow all applicable Permit to Work, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, and task risk assessment requirements.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, use, and disposal of refrigerants in compliance with EPA regulations and site environmental procedures.
  • Identify, report, and correct unsafe conditions, near misses, and incidents related to HVAC systems or work activities.
  • Participate in incident investigations and support implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Ensure HVAC systems supporting safety‑critical areas (e.g., control rooms, MCC rooms, analyzer shelters) are maintained in a reliable and compliant condition.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) processes for HVAC modifications that may impact safety, environmental compliance, or facility operations.
  • Maintain accurate safety, maintenance, and regulatory documentation related to HVAC equipment and refrigerant usage.
  • Defined responsibilities during site emergencies, including support for environmental control, ventilation, and post‑incident recovery activities.
  • Participation in emergency response drills and post‑incident reviews as related to HVAC systems.
  • Ownership of refrigerant lifecycle management, including documentation, leak tracking, reporting, and compliance with EPA and site environmental requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits related to refrigerant usage, HVAC systems, and environmental compliance.

Accountability 2: Preventative Maintenance & Reliability

  • Perform scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance on HVAC and associated systems (compressors, chillers, pumps, ductwork).
  • Diagnose signs of wear, refrigerant leaks, airflow restrictions, or electrical issues before failures.
  • Recommend improvements to PM schedules and corrective maintenance to enhance system reliability.
  • Maintain system documentation: equipment logs, maintenance history, and compliance records.

Accountability 3: Troubleshooting & Repair

  • Diagnose and repair HVAC equipment failures, including refrigerant circuits, motors, bearings, valves, ductwork, and control systems.
  • Respond to and resolve emergency breakdowns impacting plant comfort, equipment integrity, or environmental control.
  • Perform minor construction and installation of new HVAC units or modifications as required.

Accountability 4: Regulatory & Safety Compliance

  • Maintain EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification and ensure proper handling, labeling, and disposal.
  • Perform leak tests, maintain refrigerant records, and comply with environmental regulations.
  • Prepare and adhere to work scopes, Permit to Work, and Task Risk Assessments, approving changes through supervisors.
  • Follow all relevant codes (electrical, mechanical, safety) and INEOS policies to protect workers and the environment.
  • Active involvement in maintenance planning, outage preparation, and turnaround readiness to ensure HVAC systems are fully operational prior to unit startups.
  • Verification that building environmental systems supporting safety‑critical and operational areas are functional and reliable before handover to Operations.

Accountability 5: Operational Support & Availability

  • Participation in a 24/7 on‑call rotation, including weekends and holidays, to support HVAC system failures that impact safety, environmental compliance, or plant operations.
  • Timely response to emergency HVAC issues affecting control rooms, MCC rooms, analyzer shelters, and occupied buildings.
  • Support plant startups, shutdowns, and turnarounds from a building environmental and system readiness perspective.
  • Assist Operations and Engineering with ventilation control, temperature management, and process-linked HVAC troubleshooting.

Accountability 6: Capital/Expense Projects/Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for improved energy efficiency, system resilience, or cost reduction.
  • Implement modifications to reduce refrigerant losses, optimize system loads, and reduce operating costs.
  • Support planning and scheduling by providing accurate job scopes, durations, and resource estimates.
  • Active involvement in maintenance planning, outage preparation, and turnaround readiness to ensure HVAC systems are fully operational prior to unit startups.
  • Verification that building environmental systems supporting safety‑critical and operational areas are functional and reliable before handover to Operations.

Required profile:

Level of Education & Knowledge:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Technical/Trade credential preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of HVAC maintenance experience in industrial or manufacturing settings
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required; additional HVAC credentials a plus

Experience & Technical Skills:

  • Troubleshooting HVAC systems (compressors, chillers, pumps, ductwork)
  • Refrigerant handling, monitoring, and leak detection
  • Electrical diagnostics (motors, starters, controls)
  • Mechanical assembly/installation, HVAC controls understanding
  • Experience with maintenance management systems (e.g., SAP PM)

Competencies & Behavioral Skills

  • Reliable and responsive under pressure, especially during outages or critical failures
  • Clear communicator, capable of cross-functional and external engagement
  • Organized, self-directed, and detail-oriented
  • Strong safety focus and commitment to environmental compliance

Performance indicators: Describe the criteria allowing to measure to what extent the results are achieved - related to the accountabilities.

  • System uptime and response time during HVAC failures
  • Compliance with refrigerant regulations and record accuracy
  • Number and timeliness of preventative maintenance tasks
  • Energy consumption KPIs and cost-saving initiative outcomes
  • Reduction in reactive HVAC failures and work order backlog
