À propos de ce poste Global News Editor chez The New York Times

The New York Times · Sur site · New York, NY

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is seeking an innovative senior Global News editor who will assign, edit and refine the daily International report. With an eye on breaking news and evolving storylines, you will have experience fleshing out the missing holes in the report and be unafraid to keep the overall report sharp, while also overseeing handoffs. We’re looking for a leader who understands that journalistic excellence and digital excellence are one and the same, and thinks deeply about the best form and format a story needs to have the most impact. You will constantly think about how to bring more people into our coverage and how we make our journalism more accessible.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with desk leaders and editors in all three newsrooms as well as teams such as Live and Audience to lead the global report in the moment and plan for the days that follow.
  • Elevate effective headlines and clear writing across the entire report.
  • Lead and inspire a team of direct reports, including editors and reporters
  • Champion the best way to tell the stories coming across our desks, creatively evaluating forms and formats.
  • Push strong promotion of stories on the homepage and other core Times platforms.
  • Identify and respond quickly to breaking news.
  • Handle edits of all sorts, including first edits and write-throughs as needed.
  • Assign edits to fellow staffers and monitor copy flow to the print hub on deadline.
  • Identify potential stories and anticipate coverage needs, communicating plans quickly and clearly.
  • Be flexible and nimble in anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.
  • Assist the weekend editor in preparing our weekend report.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience writing and editing copy for news and enterprise, compelling headlines and captions, other display type and social copy
  • Experience and ability to multitask under deadline pressure
  • 3+ years of experience thinking about multiple story forms and formats
  • Demonstrated excellent news judgment
  • Leadership experience, including managing others with the ability to inspire and motivate others

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating with visual journalists on news and enterprise
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly pick up new topics
  • A willingness to be nimble and flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve
  • Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality
  • Being knowledgeable about Times style and applying it properly in different content types
