Job Description:

What’s the role

As a Chemical Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for performing laboratory tests on chemical products, chemical process streams, and/or outfall samples to verify and ensure adherence to manufacturing specifications, process controls, product specifications, and compliance parameters. In addition, you will document all tests performed in hard-copy format as well as in the electronic management system. You will also be expected to perform routine maintenance on testing equipment and complete housekeeping duties.

Accountabilities:

  • Recognize potential hazards in the work area

  • Use proper PPE and act in accordance with our Core Values

  • Report to work on time and dressed in the required FRCs

  • Follow attendance management guidelines

  • Maintain a clean work area and proactively support housekeeping activities

  • Complete all mandatory training on time

  • Interpret, record, and report data, and take corrective actions in accordance with established protocols

  • Follow Quality System procedures and protocols

  • Perform required and scheduled preventive maintenance activities.

  • Participate in departmental meetings

  • Prepare equipment and instrumentation for maintenance activities, including permits as required

  • Communicate clearly and thoroughly through daily logs and other reporting tools

  • Train and support other team members as needed.

  • Manage sample priorities and workload to ensure the timely delivery of results

  • Follow the Product Approval Process

  • Identify and solve problems effectively

  • Organize work efficiently and prioritize tasks appropriately

  • Work accurately and thoroughly while maintaining attention to detail

  • Collaborate effectively with others in a team environment

  • Learn and apply new tasks, procedures, and technologies

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis for any employer other than their current employer

  • Bachelor's degree and/or an associate degree in science related fields with at least two years of experience, preferably in a refinery, petrochemical, and/or compliance laboratory environment

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers

  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. Information regarding TWIC qualification standards can be found at: https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

  • As part of the pre-employment selection process, candidates are required to successfully complete all pre-employment background, drug, medical, and reference checks, including hair drug testing

  • Willingness to submit to and achieve satisfactory results on all pre-employment checks and testing

  • Ability to use computers in a work environment

  • Compliance with Deer Park policies, orders, and procedures, including those related to the safe conduct of work

What prior experiences are we looking for

  • Experience in petrochemical, refinery and/or environmental compliance testing methods and equipment, including but not limited to Karl Fischer, automated distillation, Flash Point, Liquid, Ion and Gas Chromatography techniques, X-ray fluorescence, TOC, Sulfur, Ammonia, and Sulfide analysis, pH, titrations (manual and automated), and UV-Vis spectrophotometers, is preferred.

  • Versed in the use of Sample Manager/GLIMS, Open Lab, SAP, and/or Dragon software applications in support of routine testing and reporting

  • Versed in the interpretation of SQC charts and applicable run rules.

  • Familiarity with NPDES water testing protocols is a plus.

  • Proficiency in basic chemical laboratory skills preferred (e.g., weighing, pipetting, titrating, dilutions, metric system, safe laboratory practices, unit conversions, reading and understanding laboratory methods, etc.)

  • Proficiency in basic math skills preferred (e.g., rounding numbers, fractions, percentages, simple statistics, and use of a hand calculator)

  • Proficiency in basic chemistry preferred (e.g., pH, acid-base reactions, operating principles of simple laboratory equipment, and recognition of chemical formulas)

  • Experience with personal or laboratory computers preferred (e.g., frequent use as a work tool for school or employment, data entry, and spreadsheet calculations)

  • A working knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) is necessary

What we offer

The starting rate for this position is $44.25 Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, and internal equity.

For regular full-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 10 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 10 paid holidays.
