We are seeking a Full-Time Career Counselor to support the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) in providing individualized career counseling, career development content, web and digital communications support, and career programming for approximately 4,000 biomedical trainees in the NIH Intramural Research Program. This position is hybrid role primarily based at the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland, with authorized travel to other NIH locations within 50 miles.
What You Will Do:
Provide one-on-one career counseling addressing self-assessment, career exploration, job-search strategy, interview preparation, presentation skills, professional self-advocacy, and review of resumes, curricula vitae, cover letters, and application materials.
Provide one-on-one career counseling addressing self-assessment, career interests, strengths, values, scientific and science-related career pathways, and career planning.
Coach trainees on interview preparation, presentation skills, professional self-advocacy, resumes, curricula vitae, cover letters, job-search strategies, and related career materials.
Deliver career information and counseling to individuals and groups and refer matters outside career counseling to designated OITE or NIH resources.
Research, draft, edit, update, and publish career-related articles, blog posts, program descriptions, guidance materials, and other assigned communications.
Develop and maintain accessible, accurate, plain-language content for OITE Career Services Center and other assigned webpages in accordance with Section 508 and NIH web requirements.
Manage and write content for the OITE careers blog and support approved digital communication strategies.
Provide editorial support for OITE articles, newsletters, postings, and related communications and recommend improvements to OITE content and online resources.
Contribute to career development offerings and support workshops, panels, career fairs, symposia, and similar events, including content, communications, and logistics.
Prepare counseling activity information, written content, website updates, event materials, and recommendations in accordance with assigned schedules.
Travel, when authorized, to NIH branch campuses or other approved locations to provide counseling or career development workshops.
Safeguard Government and trainee information and comply with applicable security, privacy, records management, accessibility, communications, and facility requirements.
What You Will Need:
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum of six (6) years of demonstrated experience providing career counseling, with emphasis on scientific or biomedical careers, to undergraduate, graduate, and/or postdoctoral trainees at a major university, research institution, professional society, or equivalent organization.
Knowledge of national issues and trends affecting scientific careers and the biomedical workforce.
Experience supporting self-assessment, career planning, professional communication, and delivery of career information to individuals and groups.
Experience supporting diverse trainee populations, including international trainees and trainees from historically underrepresented groups.
Experience planning or supporting large career development events such as career fairs, workshops, or symposia.
Experience managing or contributing to websites or digital communications platforms, including content management systems.
Ability to complete any required suitability determination and obtain an NIH PIV badge or other access credentials.
Incumbent capture – no other candidates were considered due to an identified incumbent who meets the labor category requirements provided by the customer
What Would Be Nice To Have:
Advanced degree in Career Counseling or a related field.
Recognized professional counseling credential or certification.
Ability to work independently, coordinate effectively with Government staff, and manage competing priorities.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce high-quality written content on defined timelines.
Strong interpersonal skills, collaboration, flexibility, initiative, sound judgment, thoroughness, and attention to detail.
Familiarity with NIH trainee programs, the NIH Intramural Research Program, or comparable biomedical research environments.
