Job Summary
Agriculture Technician II is an experienced, skilled generalist role on the Agricultural Operations Team, supporting the full scope of ranching and farming operations on a private family ranch. Working under general supervision from the Agricultural Operations Manager, this role independently executes a broad range of livestock, animal health, and farming assignments, and may guide or mentor less experienced team members in daily activities. Discretion, sound judgment, and confidentiality are essential.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Livestock operations, animal health support, and laboratory work (45%)
- Farming, feed production, pasture and forage management (40%)
- Day-to-day Ag Operations activities and applied feeding program (10%)
- Administrative tasks, ordering, and inventory management (5%)
Responsibilities & Duties
- Independently perform livestock handling, movement, and routine animal health procedures, working within veterinary protocols established by the Manager and consulting veterinarian
- Conduct sample collection and in-house laboratory work supporting animal health and herd improvement programs
- Administer reproductive management protocols as directed, including scheduled treatments and heat/behavior monitoring, in coordination with the Manager
- Maintain detailed, accurate records of animal health, treatments, and observations
- Monitor pastures and herds using available tools and technology; assist with calving and field issues as they arise
- Lead and participate in feedstuff production (grain, hay, silage, baleage) to meet herd demand, including grain milling and quality control
- Operate farm equipment, tractors, and specialized machinery; coordinate maintenance and repairs with Fleet Ops
- Support pasture improvement work — seeding, cover cropping, soil amendments, weed and pest mitigation — under the Manager's direction
- Support farm-to-table crop production from planting through harvest and processing
- Support secondary livestock operations (dairy, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry) and small-animal care as needed
- Contribute to planning and scale-up of ranching and farming initiatives, including new livestock programs
- Maintain equipment, facilities, and supply inventories to established standards
- Participate in ongoing training and share knowledge with junior team members as needed
- Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 1+ years of experience in agricultural operations, ranching, farming, or related veterinary technician work
- Strong working knowledge of animal husbandry, livestock health indicators, and farming operations
- Proficiency with farm machinery, hand and power tools, lab equipment, and agrochemical application
- Strong record keeping and organizational skills across multiple animals, pastures, and schedules
- Ability to exercise independent judgment on non-routine issues within established guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and share knowledge with less experienced team members
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent
Physical Demands & Work Conditions
- Patience and observation: Ability to spend long hours monitoring herds and crops.
- Physical stamina: Able to work with large animals in various weather conditions.
- Bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting
- Working in cramped spaces and on stepstools/ladders
- Pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 pounds
- Working outdoors with or without wet, dusty or windy weather conditions
- Working with and around combustible and/or hazardous materials, using proper PPE
- Able to drive a side by side “Utility” vehicle (UTV)
- Able to drive a full-size work truck with trailer
- Able to operate farm tractors, implements, machinery and heavy equipment
