Job Description

The Role 

General Motors Student Corps is a paid summer internship program that brings together high school students, college interns, and General Motors retirees to strengthen communities and develop the next generation of leaders. As a Student Corps Program Specialist, you will be a college intern, leading a high school-based team in planning and completing a community improvement project while supporting students’ personal, academic, and professional development. 

In this unique role, college interns can make a great impact in the metro-Detroit community, while simultaneously preparing for their own future professional careers. As a college intern, Program Specialist, you would play a crucial leadership role as you co-lead community-focused projects, while instructing critical life skills and helping students determine their next steps to achieve their post-high school goals. Program Specialist are exposed to different career paths in GM through workshops and trainings, mentorship with a GM employee in their field of study as well as participate in a group case study project tackling real world business problems. 

The Team 

Each Student Corps school team includes approximately eight to ten high school interns, two General Motors retirees, and one college Program Specialist Intern. Teams work together to develop 3-5 unique community service beautification projects in their school and surrounding neighborhood. What You’ll Do 

  • Co-lead a school team with General Motors retirees and guide high school interns through community improvement projects. 

  • Brainstorm, research, design, and help execute projects that improve the school or surrounding neighborhood. 

  • Teach and facilitate lessons on resumes, mock interviews, professionalism, leadership, and other life skills. 

  • Mentor high school students as they explore career interests, education options, and post-high school goals. 

  • Help students understand how to navigate higher education and connect their interests to potential career paths. 

  • Build productive relationships with high school students, General Motors retirees, program leaders, and other partners. 

  • Communicate expectations, provide encouragement, and help create an inclusive and supportive team environment. 

  • Maintain the budget for the assigned school team and support accurate program administration. 

  • Track and update payroll information for high school interns, as assigned. 

  • Participate in workshops, training, mentorship activities, and a group project addressing a real-world business challenge. 

  • Meet regularly with an assigned General Motors mentor to set goals, practice professional skills, and prepare for life after college. 

  • Support other program activities and related responsibilities as assigned. 

Required Qualifications 

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business, engineering, communications, psychology, technology, social work, education, or a related field. 

  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2029.  

  • Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during the 12-week summer internship 

  • Demonstrated leadership through academic, extracurricular, community service, or other activities. 

  • Strong interest in mentoring students and supporting community-focused work. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with high school students, retirees, and program leaders. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex subjects to a broad audience. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively and share knowledge in a fast-paced environment. 

  • High level of integrity, initiative, accountability, and trustworthiness. 

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and take ownership of assigned responsibilities. 

  • Customer-focused and innovative approach to problem-solving. 

  • Willingness and ability to participate in community improvement activities, which may include yard work, painting, and learning to use new tools. 

  • Ability to drive company vehicles for work assignments, such as 15 passenger vans or pickup trucks, if required by the assignment. 

Internship Dates  

12-week internship program will be held May 24th – August 13th, 2027  

Work Arrangement 

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to our Global Technical Center in Warren, MI or their assigned High School on a full-time basis.
