Position Summary

At Amber Charter Schools, our SETSS Teachers (Special Education Teacher Support Services) bring learning to life for every child. They design rigorous and engaging instruction that meets students where they are, assess progress with care and precision, and build classroom environments that are both safe and deeply responsive. They play a vital role in supporting students with disabilities, English language learners, and those identified formally or informally as at-risk, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

This role is located at our Inwood campus 532 W 215th St, New York, NY 10034. This role will be working with grades 5-8. 

 

Essential Responsibilities

Instructional Planning & Delivery

  • Assume personal responsibility for the academic progress of all students identified as at-risk and in need of literacy intervention.
  • Implement a coherent, research-based curriculum, aligned to content and grade level specific scope and sequence guiding documents.
  • Modify, differentiate and extend learning experiences to engage all identified as at-risk and in need of academic  intervention, integrating intervention supports as needed.
  • Provide direct support, guidance, and/or collaborate with colleagues to address the needs of at-risk learners as requested.
  • Document all syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, rubrics and other instructional materials and methods.
  • Maintain accurate records by completing any required session notes, trackers and/or logs, documenting academic and behavioral interventions and other anecdotal notes.
  • Use consistent school-wide practices and a variety of individualized methods to engage students in the classroom.
  • Implement various methods to promote a student-led and student-centered classroom.

Student Assessment 

  • Track student proficiency and progress towards achieving learning objectives with formative and summative assessment tools.
  • Analyze assessment results, utilizing data to inform and adjust instruction.
  • Provide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards meeting expectations and achieving goals.
  • Use student data to reflect on the effectiveness of lessons in order to improve instruction and personal practice.
  • Assess students with respect to their literacy proficiency and academic risk factors using the appropriate assessment measures.

Learning Environment

  • Teach and encourage the development of the AMBER core values.
  • Develop and maintain a warm and firm learning environment that allows students to feel safe, take risks and be creative.
  • Establish, model, practice and reinforce developmentally-appropriate rules and behaviors using clear and consistent procedures
  • Formulate and implement behavioral management plans with individual students as needed
  • Build positive and supportive partnerships with families.
  • Communicate with families frequently and effectively, to provide them with information about Title I services, instructional programs and student progress (report cards, parent/teacher conferences, etc.), maximize participation and respond to their concerns.

  • Show evidence of utilizing constructive feedback to enhance the quality of learning experiences for students.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, actively modeling cooperation and helpfulness for students.

  • Encourage and support the growth of colleagues.
  • Serve on school based committees.

Required Experience and Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • NYS teaching certification in Special Education.
  • Evidence of success advancing the learning of students identified or suspected of being academically at-risk.
  • Familiarity with high-quality curriculum programs.
  • Strong command of all Microsoft Office and Google drive programs.
  • A high degree of comfort and confidence planning and implementing rigorous, engaging and effective instruction.
  • Commitment to create and maintain a safe and responsive learning environment.
  • Capacity to develop strong relationships based on trust, respect, effective communication, and common goals.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple obligations and initiatives, strong attention to detail and excellent time management.
  • Strong command of all Microsoft Office and Google drive programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Completion and clearance of pre-employment Fingerprinting and Reference check process.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in the field of education.
  • 2 years experience as an effective and impactful educator in a school setting.
  • Experience in early childhood  intervention strategies.
  • Ability to speak, write and understand Spanish.

Work Schedule

  • 10 month work schedule
  • Amber Charter Kingsbridge Middle school hours 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Work Environment/Physical Effort:  

  • Regularly required to sit, stand for long periods of time, walk, climb stairs, speak loudly and clearly, visually observe, hear, operate a computer, and other classroom, school and office equipment, reach with hands and arms, bend down, and must occasionally lift, move and/or support up to 20 pounds. Work is being performed in a traditional multi-floor school environment with limited to no elevator access.

Compensation

  • Amber Charter Schools strictly follow a salary schedule for each role to ensure our continued commitment towards pay equity. The expected salary range for this role is $63,781- $106,246, depending on verified relevant work experience, highest level of completed education, and required certifications and/or licenses for the role. This is an exempt position.
