Position Description
Job Title: Senior Exchange Engineer
Reports To: Senior Manager, Workforce Productivity
FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: Irving, TX; Phoenix, AZ; or Tampa, FL
Summary:
The Senior Exchange Engineer serves as a deep technical expert responsible for the engineering, administration, architecture, migration, and advanced support of the company's Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365 messaging environment. This role owns Exchange Online, Hybrid Exchange, mail flow, tenant-to-tenant migrations, and messaging-related integrations, ensuring the environment remains secure, reliable, scalable, and aligned with enterprise standards.
This role works closely with the Workforce Productivity, Service Delivery, Infrastructure, Identity, and Cybersecurity teams, serving as an advanced technical escalation point for complex Exchange and messaging issues while maintaining clear accountability for platform engineering and operational excellence. This position requires travel to Meriton locations and customer sites across the U.S.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Exchange Engineering and Platform Administration
- Own the design, administration, and troubleshooting of enterprise-scale Microsoft Exchange Online and Hybrid Exchange environments
- Drive technical decisions on Exchange architecture, configuration, platform health, resiliency, and lifecycle management
- Manage mailboxes, shared mailboxes, distribution groups, resource mailboxes, permissions, transport rules, and related messaging services
- Ensure reliable SMTP routing, connectors, accepted domains, Autodiscover, and hybrid mail flow through proactive configuration and troubleshooting
- Maintain technical standards, documentation, configuration baselines, and operational procedures for Exchange services
Exchange Migration and Integration
- Lead complex Exchange migrations, including on-premises to Exchange Online, tenant-to-tenant, Hybrid Exchange, and cross-forest or cross-organization migrations
- Own migration assessments, planning, coexistence configuration, pilot migrations, cutovers, validation, and post-migration stabilization
- Drive integrations between Exchange and other Microsoft 365, identity, collaboration, and enterprise platforms
- Evaluate and apply native Microsoft migration capabilities and third-party migration tools where appropriate
Service Model and Operational Excellence
- Serve as the L2/L3 escalation point for Service Delivery on complex Exchange, mail-flow, mailbox, authentication, and messaging-related incidents
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for critical messaging outages and recurring service issues
- Drive service reliability, platform health, change discipline, documentation, and production support readiness
- Develop and maintain PowerShell-based automation for Exchange administration, reporting, migrations, and bulk operations
- Partner with Microsoft and other technology vendors to resolve complex platform issues
Security and Cybersecurity Alignment
- Partner closely with Cybersecurity to ensure Exchange services and configurations align with enterprise security requirements
- Own messaging-related security configurations, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC, anti-spam, anti-phishing, and mail-flow protections, based on established security standards
- Ensure Exchange-related identity, authentication, permissions, and access-control requirements are met in coordination with Identity and Cybersecurity teams
- Provide Exchange engineering support during cybersecurity investigations and incidents involving messaging systems
- Maintain clear separation between Exchange platform administration and Cybersecurity ownership of security policy, governance, and security operations

Education/Experience:
- Required:
- 7+ years of progressive IT experience with significant hands-on experience supporting Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365 messaging environments
- Deep technical expertise in Exchange Online, Hybrid Exchange, and Microsoft Exchange Server
- Demonstrated experience executing large-scale Exchange migrations, particularly on-premises-to-cloud and tenant-to-tenant migrations
- Strong knowledge of Exchange architecture, SMTP, mail routing, connectors, accepted domains, Autodiscover, and mailbox management
- Strong PowerShell scripting and automation skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Entra ID Connect, authentication, and identity synchronization
- Experience troubleshooting complex enterprise messaging, mail-flow, authentication, and migration issues
- Demonstrated success working with Service Delivery teams while maintaining accountability for engineering and advanced escalation
- Strong documentation, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
- Willing to be hands-on and resolve complex technical issues directly
- Preferred:
- Experience with third-party migration platforms such as Quest, BitTitan MigrationWiz, AvePoint, or similar technologies
- Knowledge of Microsoft Defender for Office 365 and messaging-related security controls
- Familiarity with Microsoft Purview, including retention, eDiscovery, litigation hold, and Exchange-related compliance capabilities
- Experience with other Microsoft 365 platforms, including Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Power Platform
- Familiarity with enterprise security, compliance, governance, and service-management practices
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and operational support capabilities

Some travel may be required.
