Position Overview:

Provides a secure and safe environment that allows patients, visitors, physicians, personnel and volunteers to deliver or receive quality services with minimal threats against their personal well-being and property. Is responsible for patrolling and monitoring facility premises, observing and reporting suspicious and unauthorized activities, and unsafe conditions. Is responsible for access control, control of keys and emergency response and notification. Renders assistance and security related services to staff, physicians, patients, and visitors, including monitoring and restraining violent patients. Documents incidents relative to the facility and coordinates with local law enforcement agencies.

These Principal Accountabilities, Requirements and Qualifications are not exhaustive but are merely the most descriptive of the current job. JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

SITE SECURITY:

  • Conducts interior and exterior patrols to identify risks, deter criminal activity, and prevent fire, theft, misuse, and vandalism of property.
  • While on patrol, inspects doors, windows, locks, and access points to ensure facility security; observes and assesses behavior to identify activity detrimental to the organization.
  • Secures or unlocks facility doors/entrances at specified times.
  • Inspects all elevators and interior fire escape stairwells reporting any identified discrepancies to the facilities operations and/or maintenance department personnel.
  • Monitors surveillance equipment, inspects buildings, equipment, garages and access points, and prevents losses and damages by reporting irregularities.
  • Responds to emergency codes, fire drills, and alarms.
  • Provides security education and may conduct fire drills as instructed by leadership.
  • Escalates appropriately, any issues with access control systems.

  • Maintains awareness of patient privacy and HIPAA requirements during all security activities, ensuring confidential information is not inadvertently accessed or disclosed.
  • Monitors and controls access to security-sensitive areas as designated by organizational policy, including pharmacies, nurseries, behavioral health units, and restricted departments.

EMERGENT SITUATIONS:

  • Responds to all emergency calls for assistance, including workplace violence, disturbances, combative patients, infant/child abductions, bomb threats, suspicious packages, evacuations, and chemical spills. 
  • Employs verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques as the primary response to agitated, disruptive, or potentially violent individuals.
  • Removes and/or restrains individual(s) to a secure location, and if necessary, calls local authorities.
  • Assists local authorities such as the police and fire department.

INCIDENT REPORTING:

  • Reports unusual circumstances to the lead, supervisor, and/or manager.
  • Documents observations, incidents, and witness statements clearly and accurately in accordance with departmental reporting standards.
  • Completes accurate, detailed, clear and timely security incident reports; documenting all relevant observations, actions taken, and outcomes.

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Maintains a professional and service-oriented approach in all interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, students, and staff.
  • Acts as first point of contact regarding security assistance for staff and visitors.
  • Answers general questions related to the property or security policies and procedures.
  • Assists staff and visitors with lost and found items.
  • Identifies individuals with special needs and provides appropriate assistance.
  • Assists in resolving routine concerns for patients, visitors, and staff in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provides wayfinding assistance and escort services for patients, visitors, and staff as needed, particularly during evening and overnight hours.

SECURITY OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO ACUTE FACILITIES:

  • Provides a security presence within the emergency department for individuals, hospital personnel, County mental health personnel, and the general public.
  • Accepts individuals who are on a 5150 hold from law enforcement and 1799 holds initiated by clinical staffWorks with law enforcement to ensure that the individual is settled into the facility and appears to be relatively stable, prior to releasing the law enforcement officer to other duties.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and controlled environment in high-risk patient care areas, including behavioral health settings.
  • Ensures the continued safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintains awareness of and responds to infant and pediatric security protocols, including abduction prevention procedures and Code Pink activation.
  • Security staff shall primarily use verbal intervention skills to achieve this goal, but may use physical restraint, if reasonable and necessary.




EDUCATION:

HS Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)


CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:
PSO - Proprietary Private Security Officer

REGULATORY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS (CALIFORNIA BSIS) to be verified by hiring manager:

  • 8 hours Power to Arrest and Use of Force
  • 16 hours within 30 days
  • 16 hours within 6 months
  • Total 40 hours initial training
  • 8 hours annual refresher



TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
1 year recent relevant experience


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • General knowledge of the usual duty requirements of a security officer with an emphasis on the physical and emotional maturity required for the high degree of judgment and diplomacy necessary to work efficiently in a healthcare environment.
  • Must present as approachable, open, professional, and positive.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow established procedures and respond effectively to routine and emergent situations.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and the ability to interact respectfully with diverse patient, visitor, and staff populations.
  • Ability to write incident reports and read business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables, in situations where limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Pay Range is $30.35 to $42.48 / hour

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is only one component of Sutter Health’s comprehensive total rewards program. Eligible positions also include a comprehensive benefits package.
