We are seeking a crystallisation process development scientist to join our team in the Pharmaceutical Sciences department within Drug Product Development.

The Global Crystallisation team within Pharmaceutical Sciences designs a final particle formation process which optimizes drug product processing and performance, based on holistic understanding of how structure influences particle and powder properties.  As projects advance through development, crystallisation scientists contribute to project teams by performing laboratory studies, analyzing data and supporting plant campaigns, from lead optimization up to and including the transfer and industrialization of manufacturing processes to commercial facilities.  The role is fast-paced and dynamic as you may be working on a number of multi-disciplinary teams. The department is an exceptional training ground on several skills and disciplines.

  • Design crystallisation processes to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with appropriate properties for drug product processing.

  • Identify and resolve polymorphic form issues within crystallisation processes

  • Develop process models which demonstrate predictive capability and first-principles process understanding.

  • Independently execute laboratory protocols and experiments to link the structural and bulk properties of an API to its downstream performance in order to inform R&D decision making.

  • Work effectively and collaboratively on multi-disciplinary development teams, alongside Chemists, Chemical Analysts, Engineers, Modelers and Pharmaceutical Scientists.

  • Perform data management and some data interpretation, recording results effectively and communicating results in technical reports.  Effectively present at internal meetings.  May participate in technical reviews on projects.

  • Comply with local regulatory and data integrity requirements, including GSK policies and procedures, with high quality and attention to one’s own safety.

  • Own and maintain laboratory equipment, where required. Actively research improvements in equipment capabilities to input into new technology investments where there is a positive business case for doing so.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • BSc in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or related discipline

  • Experience working in an organic chemistry lab environment

  • Demonstrated learning agility combined with strong critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • PhD in Crystallisation or related field OR MSc with proven industrial experience

  • Experience in independent planning and execution of experiments including interpretation of analytical data.

  • Experience in the design of crystallisation processes to produce APIs with appropriate properties for drug product processing.

  • Familiarity with physical and solid-state characterisation techniques.

  • Experience in working in and making contributions to multi-disciplinary teams.  Must be inclusive, respectful, and supportive of colleagues.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.  Proven ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.  May have equipment ownership or lab supervisory responsibilities.

  • Experience with documentation using electronic notebooks.
