The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation & Archives at Cornell University Library is seeking applications for the Research and Instruction Archivist.

The Opportunity:

Cornell University Library invites a curious and collaborative professional to join us as a Research and Instruction Archivist, located within the Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation & Archives!

We are looking for a colleague who is enthusiastic about providing excellent reference services, instruction, and outreach to the Cornell and research community. While we would love you to have some experience in these areas, it is important that you bring enthusiasm to public services and commitment to evolving practice.

Reporting to the Head of the Kheel Center, the Research and Instruction Archivist will work collegially and collaboratively within the Library to ensure excellence and integrity in its collections, services, and programs, and across the Library and the University to promote its mission and values. The Research and Instruction Archivist contributes to the Library’s work catalyzing research and discovery and advancing student success through engaged stewardship of collections to the Cornell and research community.

In collaboration with colleagues, this position will engage with the high-paced environment of the Kheel Center’s public services unit, providing teaching and reference support to the Cornell and research community. The Research and Instruction Archivist will work with faculty to design and teach course-integrated instruction sessions to empower students to develop primary source literacy and research skills. The position will manage the Kheel Center’s robust daily reference and reproduction services, monitoring systems, queues, and handling in-person and remote consultations. Outreach activities for this position include planning and implementing initiatives that engage constituent communities and promote the use of archives relating to the history of labor relations in the United States. This may include exhibit curation, LibGuides, tours, events, and digital outreach efforts.

Archivists at Cornell University hold academic appointments as Research, Teaching, and Extension faculty. The incumbent must meet Cornell University Library requirements for Research, Teaching, and Extension (RTE) faculty promotion and reappointment through engagement in service and scholarship activities.

Candidate Profile:

Required Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in an archives, special collections, library, museum, or closely related cultural heritage environment, or a concentration in archives management, and no more than three years of relevant professional experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, students, researchers, and colleagues in support of teaching, learning, and research.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide reference services and primary source instruction.

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to fostering learning, research, service and/or outreach in a diverse community.

  • Knowledge of cultural heritage standards, ethical stewardship, and key issues and trends in academic libraries and research universities.

Additionally, we’d prefer

  • Background or demonstrated interest in American history or labor relations.

  • Experience using Aeon, LibAnswers, LibInsight, ArchiveSpace or similar bibliographic tools.

This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The incumbent will typically work on the Ithaca campus.

We anticipate filling this position at the academic rank of Assistant Archivist. The anticipated salary range is $67,500-$77,000 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Based on Cornell’s internal procedures and ranking structure, an Assistant Archivist is an early career/entry level role. Individuals at this rank typically have less than three years of experience in a relevant professional appointment.
