The VFA Shift Supervisor will serve as the technical and operational leader for an assigned shift, by utilizing technical expertise and operations experience to support safe and efficient production.  This role will manage and develop a team of roughly four to six direct reports and work closely with other shifts and site departments such as: Maintenance, Lab, Engineering, Material Handling and Planning to drive continuous improvement, maximize equipment performance, and ensure production targets are met.  The position is responsible for meeting production goals through strong leadership, sound technical decision-making, and a commitment to continuous improvement, safety, and environmental performance.

This role will support the commissioning and startup of a new plant on site. While the role will eventually transition to a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, the first 1–2 years will be worked on a Monday–Friday daytime schedule.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead shift production activities by providing technical guidance during commissioning and routine operations, resolving process issues, and developing operator capabilities.

  • Support all commissioning and startup activities for the new plant, including hiring and onboarding process operators, implementing commissioning plans, facilitating training programs, documenting safe work practices, and establishing operational work processes.

  • Develop a highly skilled and engaged workforce through coaching, training, performance management, and succession planning.

  • Obtain Permit Writer certification and manage Safe Work, Hot Work, and High Hazard Line Break permits during assigned shifts.

  • Troubleshoot process, equipment, operability, and quality issues; identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.

  • Monitor team performance and provide timely coaching, feedback, and corrective actions to ensure expectations are met.

  • Support operator training, equipment startups, and continuous team development initiatives.

  • Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture through visible leadership and adherence to site safety standards.

  • Exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

  • Actively participate in EHS programs, site audits, safety committees, job safety analyses (JSAs), and other safety initiatives.

  • Create and manage production process orders and maintenance work orders within SAP.

  • Conduct routine field rounds and ensure effective shift handovers to support operational continuity.

  • Identify safety risks proactively and coach employees on safe work practices to support a zero-incident culture.

  • Ensure production operations consistently meet quality, productivity, and safety objectives.

  • Deliver production targets while maintaining operational efficiency and compliance standards.

  • Demonstrate the ability to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced, and commercially driven environment.

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of plant processes, equipment, offloading operations, and packaging systems.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, RCRA, and DOT requirements.

  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and workplace organization.

  • Participate in the site's Emergency Response Team and Incident Command System training programs.

  • Maintain respirator qualification requirements, including the ability to remain clean-shaven as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a chemical manufacturing environment;

OR

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 8 years of experience in a chemical manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to perform physical activities, including climbing stairs, prolonged walking, and bending.

  • Strong knowledge of hazardous chemical handling and manufacturing safety practices.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, follow direction, and effectively collaborate across multiple departments.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of chemical manufacturing processes and equipment, including reactors, distillation columns, and process automation systems.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, SAP, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), PLCs, DeltaV, and process data historians.

The expected compensation range for this position is between $77,270.00 and $113,322.00 plus discretionary bonuses. The exact compensation may vary based on your skills, experience and other factors permitted by law.
