Position Summary

The Manufacturing Process Documentation Intern will support Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Safety teams by observing, documenting, and helping define manufacturing processes across the plant. This role focuses on converting real‑world work into clear, accurate, and usable documentation—including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Visual Work Instructions (VWIs), and related materials—that support safety, quality, training, and operational consistency.

This is a highly collaborative, hands‑on role that blends time on the manufacturing floor with structured documentation, systems thinking, and cross‑functional collaboration. The position is ideal for a curious, detail‑oriented individual interested in manufacturing, quality, and safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Observe manufacturing operations on the floor to understand how work is actually performed, including interviewing operators, leads, and supervisors to capture critical knowledge.

  • Photograph, annotate, and take structured notes on manufacturing processes, with attention to safety, quality, and operational relevance.

  • Develop, revise, and standardize process documentation, including SOPs, work instructions, and visual aids, in collaboration with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Safety.

  • Identify and document safety‑critical steps, quality checkpoints, required controls, and escalation paths within processes.

  • Help define and clarify processes that are undocumented, inconsistently documented, or changing due to new methods, equipment, or improvements.

  • Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders to ensure documentation is accurate, usable, and aligned with engineering intent and quality requirements.

  • Support the development and improvement of documentation frameworks, templates, standards, and organizational systems.

  • Ensure documentation is suitable for multiple audiences, including floor operators, supervisors, quality inspectors, engineers, and new hires.

  • Participate in meetings, reviews, and walkthroughs related to process definition, safety, quality, and training.

  • Maintain organized records, version control, and traceability for documentation updates.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying gaps, ambiguities, or opportunities for better clarity and standardization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a technical, analytical, or process‑focused field.

  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to observe complex work and translate it into clear, structured documentation.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel, for creating, formatting, and maintaining professional documentation.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail, organization, and follow‑through.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including hourly operators, engineers, quality personnel, and supervisors.

  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment and observing hands‑on production processes.

  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and collaborate effectively as part of a team.

  • Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to ask questions and seek clarity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and logically.

  • Coursework or experience related to manufacturing, quality systems, safety, operations, process design, or documentation.

  • Experience creating or working with SOPs, work instructions, training materials, or other structured documentation.

  • Familiarity with safety concepts, quality assurance principles, or continuous improvement methods.

  • Interest in pursuing a future career in Technical Documentation, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Safety, or a related technical discipline.

Work Environment

  • Approximately 25% of time spent on the manufacturing floor observing and documenting processes.

  • Approximately 75% of time spent in an office or collaborative environment focused on documentation, analysis, and coordination.

  • Some exposure to safety‑ and quality‑critical processes where accuracy and clarity are essential.
