Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Accountant, GL Accounting, who is a self-starter and team player to grow from assisting with to leading our month-end close processes. An ideal candidate should have a thorough understanding of US GAAP accounting for revenue recognition, AR, deferred revenue, inventory/COGS, AP/accrued expenses, prepaids, and fixed assets. This person should have hands-on experience performing various month-end close tasks, including journal entry preparation, BS reconciliations, P&L variance analyses and financial reporting.
The right candidate will be able to review work prepared by others, provide timely feedback and train/coach the junior staff when needed. This person should be able to maintain good documentation on managed areas and conduct continuous improvements on current processes and procedures. They should also be able to collaborate well with other teams, such as AP, AR, Business Systems, FP&A, Inventory Management and Operations. This person will report to the Controller.
This position is remote in the US and has up to a 10% travel requirement to the NYC office. This candidate must be able to work in the Eastern Standard Time Zone daily.
Responsibilities
Own preparation tasks during month-end close: prepare journal entries with solid JE support, BS reconciliations, supporting schedules for financial reporting and documents for audit requests.
Review work prepared by the junior staff. Provide timely feedback. Provide training and coaching to the junior staff when needed.
Perform cross-period and actual-vs-forecast analyses for BS and P&L and provide good explanations on large variances. Identify missing revenue or expenses and determine whether to accrue for that item.
Maintain good documentation on managed areas in accordance with US GAAP.
Prepare documents for audit requests, assist with answering questions from the auditors to ensure a smooth and expedited audit annually.
Streamline processes, identify inefficiencies in current processes, collaborate with the Controller and the VP of Finance on solutions to those inefficiencies.
Collaborate with the Controller and the VP of Finance in establishing and implementing internal controls and accounting policies.
Research US GAAP technical accounting topics as needed.
Manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines with strong attention to detail and accuracy. Keep the Controller and the VP of Finance posted on issues identified and brainstorm solutions with them.
Be open to learning new systems, open to new tasks and challenges, eager to learn.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
Has an active CPA license.
Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting. Must have a mix of public accounting (audit only) and industry accounting.
Extensive hands-on experience in month-end close tasks, such as preparing journal entries, preparing BS reconciliations, preparing support schedules for financial statements and audits, reviewing and approving work prepared by others, maintaining process and procedure documentation.
Ability to assist with and eventually take ownership of financial reporting and periodic tax filings.
Strong attention to detail and sense of ownership and responsibility.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent project management skills, strong ability to prioritize tasks to achieve objectives under tight or competing deadlines.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment with an eye toward creating more efficient processes.
Ability to work independently as a self-starter without close supervision.
Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with others both in the Accounting Department and outside of Accounting on larger initiatives and projects.
Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
Ability to train and coach others and provide timely feedback.
Prior experience with Sage Intacct (ERP), Ramp (expense management), Nominal (close management), Tesorio (billings, cash collection and application), and/or Salesforce (CRM) is preferred. Adaptable to new systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Public accounting experience from one of the Big 4 accounting firms.
Industry accounting experience in GL Accounting, and/or from a SaaS company.
People management experience.
Training and coaching experience.
Experience with AI tools for automation and efficiency improvements.
Compensation
The expected base salary range for this position is $125,000-$150,000. Actual compensation will depend on factors including budget, skills, experience, location, and internal equity. This position may also be eligible for bonuses, equity, or other forms of compensation, where applicable.
