Landscape Pruning Technician (part-time, 28 hours/week)

The Arboriculture Technician assists the Arborist Supervisor in properly pruning and maintaining all assigned shrubs and hedges in the area. She/He assists the supervisor in coaching students on proper pruning techniques for all shrub types, maintaining workflow efficiency, and making appropriate behavioral and productivity adjustments to support individual learning and performance. She/He will also ensure safe and proper equipment operation and use of pruning tools. She/He is responsible for pruning correctly, maintenance, and daily requirement needs. She/He also participates in on-call snow removal.

What you’ll do in this position:

• Operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage

• Interact with Campus, MTC, Church employees, and visitors in a professional manner

• Assists Arborist Supervisor by overseeing the pruning crew in the Supervisor’s absence

• Assists the Supervisor with hands on pruning training for shrubs, hedges, roses, espalier, uprights, etc.

• Keep up to date with online training

• Assists Supervisor with online and individual training for proper equipment use, maintenance, and operation

• Ensure that pruning has been completed properly

• Ensure that clean-up is completed properly to maintain a safe environment for the campus community and the gardening crews

• Verify the accuracy of data when updating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) information as requested by Supervisor

• Inventory shrubs, location, square-footage, issues, and pruning needs

• Understanding of pruning schedule created by Arborist Supervisor

• On call during snow season to work with a team in assigned snow areas to clear walks, stairs, roads, plazas, crosswalks, ADA areas, parking lots, and as necessary, athletic fields, in a safe and nondestructive manner

• Assists in calling crew members in for snow removal

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

• A firm commitment to the mission of BYU

• 1 year of experience in pruning or related field

• High school diploma

• Current state driver’s license from any U.S. state

• Ability to pass post-interview physical exam

• Respect and adhere to safety guidelines

• Professional attitude, dress, and adherence to the University's Honor Code

• Work courteously with all BYU employees, students, visitors, and customers

• Training and mentoring skills

Preferred

• Experience on a BYU pruning crew

• Ability to obtain a BYU CMV license

• Ability to obtain a UDOT medical card

Pay Grade: 47

Typical Starting Pay: $18.75 to $23.75 an hour
