The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of the newest, most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world, enabling its growing research community to study materials with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing cutting-edge capabilities. Together with visiting researchers from all around the world, interdisciplinary teams at NSLS-II uncover the atomic structure, elemental make-up, and electronic behavior of materials. By creating this new, deeper understanding of materials, these research teams advance our knowledge in a wide range of scientific disciplines such as life sciences, quantum materials, energy storage, advanced materials science, physics, chemistry, and biology.


Position Description

NSLS-II is seeking an Electronic Technician under general direction; the Electronics Technician will work in the Electrical Engineering Technical Support group providing support to power supply and electronic systems. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and repair complex power supply and other electronic systems using test equipment.
  • Support the development and construction of prototype power supplies and other electronic equipment.
  • Repair and replace components and circuit boards in electronic systems.
  • Support operations and troubleshoot power supply and control systems.
  • Proficient with schematics and mechanical assembly drawings.
  • Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities.
  • Overtime work, including emergency call-in, required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus:
    - a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years’ relevant work experience or;
    - a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years’ relevant experience or;
    - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years’ relevant work experience or;- 10 years’ relevant work experience.
  • Experience with fabrication, assembly, wiring, testing electronics systems.
  • Experience with analog/digital electronics, computers and standard test equipment (ex. function generators, oscilloscopes, multi-meters).
  • Ability to work from schematics, diagrams, and written procedures.
  • Strong computer skills with applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Basic machine shop skills ex. Cutting tools, drill press)
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of technical staff.
  • Respond to Emergency Call-ins outside of normal working hours.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus:
    - a BS degree in a technical field and 6 years’ relevant work experience or;
    - a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 10 years’ relevant experience or;
    - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 11 years’ relevant work experience or;
  •  12 years’ relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in surface-mount soldering techniques
  • Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving component-level electronic issues.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Able to climb a ladder and work at heights up to 30 feet
  • Good hand / eye coordination
  • Good vision and hand dexterity
  • Will be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects

  • This is an onsite position.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $85,500.00 - $128,883.00 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
