Director, Physician Reimbursement Strategy
Reports to: Chief Commercial Officer
Direct Reports: None
Travel: Occasional (client and prospect meetings, industry conferences)
Position Summary
Assembly is looking for a recognized expert in physician reimbursement to deepen the level of insight we bring to every practice we work with — and every practice considering working with us. This person lives and breathes the mechanics of physician billing: how claims move, why they get denied, where AR quietly ages, and what separates a practice that collects well from one that doesn't.
This expertise doesn't sit on a shelf. It shows up in how we diagnose a practice's financial health, how we explain what's really driving their results, and how we demonstrate — with substance, not sales language — that we understand physician reimbursement as well as anyone in the industry. This person works closely with our commercial team, but their value is the depth they bring, not a sales pitch they deliver.
Key Responsibilities
Reimbursement Expertise & Analysis
- Serve as Assembly's senior authority on physician billing and reimbursement, with particular depth in Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and Pain Management
- Analyze a practice's collections reports and AR data to identify what's driving strong performance, what's holding it back, the root causes behind denials, and where and why receivables are aging
- Translate complex billing and reimbursement data into clear, accurate explanations that hold up to scrutiny from practice administrators, physicians, and CFOs
Client & Prospect Advisory
- Participate in client and prospect conversations as a subject-matter expert, providing an honest, substantive assessment of a practice's revenue cycle — not a sales narrative
- Support the commercial team in finalist meetings and, where relevant, RFP responses by grounding the conversation in real analysis of the practice's own data
- Build long-term credibility with prospective clients by demonstrating genuine command of their specialty's billing complexity
Knowledge Development & Thought Leadership
- Monitor payer policy changes, regulatory developments, and industry trends affecting physician reimbursement, and translate them into practical implications for practices and for Assembly's internal teams
- Develop case studies, white papers, and educational content that reflect Assembly's depth of expertise in physician revenue cycle management
- Serve as an internal resource, helping colleagues across the company understand the nuances of specialty-specific billing
What it takes to join the team:
Required
- 8–10 years of hands-on experience in physician billing and revenue cycle management
- Deep, demonstrable expertise in denial management, AR aging analysis, and collections reporting
- Direct experience with, or strong depth across, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic, and/or Pain Management billing
- Ability to read complex financial and collections data and explain it clearly and accurately to non-technical audiences
- Strong communication skills; comfortable representing Assembly's expertise directly to practice leadership and physicians
- A genuine interest in the mechanics of reimbursement — someone who enjoys understanding why something is happening, not just reporting that it is
Preferred
- Experience across additional specialties beyond the three noted above
- Experience developing case studies, whitepapers, or other content that reflects technical depth
- Prior experience working alongside sales or business development teams in a healthcare services or RCM company
- Formal billing/coding certification (e.g., CPC, CPB, CPMA) — valued but not a prerequisite
What Success Looks Like
- Practices and prospects experience this person as a genuine expert who understands their business — not a sales resource
- Assembly's reputation for reimbursement expertise strengthens across the client base and the market
- A growing body of case studies and thought leadership content that reflects real analytical depth
- Colleagues across sales, operations, and client services regularly seek this person out as the authority on physician reimbursement
