Director of Digital News & Audience – New Jersey 101.5
* This is a full-time, in-office position in Trenton that involves working closely and collaboratively with our New Jersey content teams. *
Lead the Next Evolution of Digital News & Audience Growth
Are you a sharp editor, strategic digital thinker, and hands-on content creator who understands how great stories find audiences today? At Townsquare Media – New Jersey, we’re looking for a Director of Digital News & Audience to help lead the digital evolution of New Jersey 101.5, while serving as a digital content resource for our other brands across New Jersey.
This is a digital-first, hands-on content leadership role at the intersection of journalism, content, audience, and growth. You’ll work alongside our journalists, personalities, producers, and content teams to create compelling original content, strengthen the stories we’re already telling, and expand their reach across web, social, video, apps, newsletters, and emerging platforms.
You don’t need to come from radio. Your experience may be in a digital newsroom, social or video team, local media company, creator-led organization, or another digital-first environment. What matters most is that you understand great storytelling, strong journalism, and how audiences discover, consume, and share content across platforms.
And this isn’t a role that manages from the sidelines. You’ll write, edit, publish, produce, package, analyze, and create content yourself, while helping talented people around you make their work even stronger.
Why Townsquare Media?
Townsquare is a media, entertainment, and digital marketing solutions company dedicated to serving small and mid-sized markets across the U.S. We own and operate 354 radio stations and more than 400 local websites across 74 markets—including trusted New Jersey stations.
We combine the power of local media with best-in-class digital solutions to help businesses grow—offering everything from broadcast and digital advertising to SEO, web design, and programmatic marketing.
What You’ll Do:
As Director of Digital News & Audience, you’ll help shape our digital content strategy while staying deeply involved in day-to-day execution. You’ll serve as both a leader and a hands-on editor, helping shape the digital voice of our local brands. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading digital news and content strategy for New Jersey 101.5, helping identify, develop, and execute compelling original and breaking-news coverage across platforms
- Creating, editing, publishing, and packaging content across websites, apps, social media, video, newsletters, and other digital channels
- Partnering with journalists, on-air personalities, producers, and creators to turn strong ideas and existing content into platform-specific digital experiences
- Elevating our social and video storytelling, including platform-native hooks, headlines, captions, thumbnails, pacing, formats, and creative approaches for Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and emerging platforms
- Coaching and collaborating with content teams on digital storytelling, SEO, audience development, social strategy, and evolving best practices
- Using audience and content analytics to understand performance, identify opportunities, test new ideas, and make data-informed editorial decisions
- Expanding content distribution through SEO, search and social discovery, newsletters, apps, push notifications, and other audience-growth channels
- Supporting day-to-day news priorities and coordination while balancing breaking news, daily content production, and longer-term audience-growth initiatives
- Serving as a digital content resource across our New Jersey brands, helping teams capitalize on strong stories and audience opportunities
- Exploring new platforms, technologies, and AI-assisted content and workflow tools to improve efficiency and creativity while maintaining strong editorial standards and human judgment
What You’ll Bring:
- 5+ years of experience in digital journalism, digital media, audience development, social/video content, online publishing, or a related content environment
- A proven track record of creating digital content that earns and grows an audience
- Exceptional writing, editing, story-framing, and headline-writing skills
- Strong editorial judgment and the ability to make smart, responsible decisions quickly, particularly during breaking or developing news
- Deep familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, including platform-specific formats, audience behavior, discovery, and best practices
- Strong understanding of social and short-form video storytelling, including hooks, pacing, captions, thumbnails, titles, and vertical video
- Hands-on experience creating, editing, publishing, and packaging digital content—not simply directing others
- Experience using analytics and performance data to identify opportunities and turn insights into actionable content decisions
- Strong understanding of SEO, search and social discovery, newsletters, apps, push notifications, and digital audience development
- Experience collaborating with and coaching reporters, writers, personalities, producers, or other content creators
- Strong organizational, communication, and project-management skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment
- Familiarity with CMS platforms, social publishing tools, analytics platforms, and digital/video production workflows
- Curiosity about emerging platforms, creator trends, changing audience behaviors, and new technologies
- Knowledge of New Jersey—its communities, culture, issues, and personalities—is a major plus
- High School Diploma (required); college coursework or BA/BS degree (preferred)
Most importantly, we’re looking for someone with great instincts, curiosity, creativity, and a bias toward action. You should be excited to experiment, pay close attention to what audiences are telling us through performance and engagement, and turn those insights into action. Just as importantly, you’ll be a collaborative, positive teammate who makes the people around you better.
What’s In It for You?
We offer a supportive environment where creativity and growth are encouraged:
- Competitive salary + bonus program
- 3 weeks PTO + 9 paid holidays
- Medical, Dental, Vision, and Pet Insurance
- 401(k) Retirement Plan
- Company-provided laptop
- Casual, high-energy work environment
