The Role

The Communications Executive plays an important role in supporting the Financial Times’ business objectives and editorial priorities at an exciting stage in the company’s growth.

Working within the Communications and Marketing Group, you will help shape and communicate the FT’s narrative and reputation to external audiences as the organisation continues its evolution as a global digital media business and advances its subscriptions strategy.

You will support a broad range of communications activity, from media relations and integrated campaigns to monitoring, reporting and team coordination. Working closely with colleagues across Communications, Brand and Creative, as well as teams in the UK, US and APAC, you will help generate positive awareness of the FT’s journalism, people and business.

This is a varied role for someone with a strong interest in news and digital media who enjoys writing, building relationships and working collaboratively in a fast-moving environment.

This is a 15-month fixed term contract opportunity ending in December 2027.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the FT communications team in the UK with external communications activity, including assignments supporting the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer and CEO.

  • Work closely with Brand and Creative colleagues to support integrated campaigns across the Communications and Marketing Group.

  • Support communications from the FT Press Office, including drafting press releases, media materials and pitches that generate positive coverage of FT journalism and the wider business.

  • Handle incoming media enquiries and support proactive outreach to secure interviews and appearances for FT spokespeople and journalists across broadcast, podcasts and digital platforms.

  • Build and maintain targeted media lists and develop relationships with journalists, producers and presenters.

  • Identify emerging opportunities across traditional and new media channels to extend the reach of FT journalism and the FT brand.

  • Identify and engage relevant content creators across YouTube and social platforms.

  • Prepare media briefings and conduct background research for senior communications colleagues, spokespeople and journalists ahead of interviews and public appearances.

  • Lead the team’s use of media and social media monitoring tools, maintaining accurate tracking of communications activity, news coverage and journalists’ broadcast appearances.

  • Help organise the team work plan, map outputs against targets and produce clear meeting notes and actions.

  • Support coordination between the FT’s UK, US and APAC communications teams.

  • Contribute to other communications activity as required, including internal communications and events.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience working within a communications, marketing or events team.

  • A genuine interest in news, current affairs and digital media, together with an understanding of the evolving media landscape.

  • Strong awareness of the stories, formats, programmes and platforms that engage different audiences.

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt content and tone for different audiences and channels.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills, with confidence working with collaborators at different levels of seniority.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills

  • Able to work across multiple pieces of work and respond to changing priorities in a timely manner.

  • Strong analytical skills and a data-informed approach to assessing communications impact.

  • Experience collaborating across functions, teams and geographic regions.

  • A proactive, pragmatic and collaborative approach, with a willingness to contribute beyond immediate responsibilities where this supports the wider team.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with media and social media monitoring tools.

  • Experience supporting media relations, press office activity or journalist outreach.

  • Knowledge of broadcast, podcast, digital and creator-led media environments.

  • Experience tracking communications activity and using data to help assess results.

  • Experience working within a global or geographically distributed organisation.
