Job Description:

Parsons has a career opportunity for an amazingly talented CBA - Environmental Technician IV to join our Environmental Team at the Faro Mine Remediation Project (FMRP). In this role, you will support various aspects of environmental monitoring and compliance at one of the largest and most complex abandoned mine remediation projects in Canada.

This role is a rotational position (2 weeks on & 2 weeks off), 10 hours per day. Employees are provided with a Living Out Allowance and are responsible for providing their own meals.

This is a unionized position represented by USW Local #925. Terms and conditions of employment are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Union membership and dues will apply. The hourly wage for this position is $34.71

The FMRP, located in Faro, Yukon, is located 4 hours northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon, and currently has a population of approximately 350 people. Furnished housing will be provided; you will be required to prepare your own meals during the stay in Faro.  Flights to Whitehorse, travel between Whitehorse and Faro, and daily transportation to and from the Mine Site to Faro will be provided.  

What You'll Be Doing: 

Independently execute and be proficient in the following tasks:

  • Sample and monitor water discharges from water treatment and pumping systems;
  • Perform geotechnical inspections and monitoring of on-site infrastructures, including pits, ponds, dams, diversion channels, waste rock & overburden dumps, etc.;
  • Conduct inspections of fuel tanks, special waste storage, on-site landfill, etc.;
  • Collect water, soil and sediment samples, as required;
  • Conduct environmental compliance monitoring on third-party consultant and construction work activities;
  • Carry out air quality monitoring programs;
  • Action on spill responses and investigate spills and reporting;
  • Implement waste and material management, sediment and erosion control monitoring, spill prevention measures, wildlife mitigation measures, etc.;
  • Complete geotechnical alert investigation and reporting;
  • Calibrate equipment required to complete the tasks above, where applicable;
  • Review field notes, checklists, observation logs, photo logs, and other documentation;
  • Draft technical reports, such as monthly environmental reports, monthly geotechnical reports, spill investigation reports, and other reports, as required; 
  • Implement internal QA/QC programs;
  • Maintain and update various trackers; and
  • Attend internal meetings and attend external meetings where required.
  • Plan and schedule daily, weekly, monthly, and annual tasks in consultation with Level 5 Environmental Technician and Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Environmental Manager.

What Required Skills You'll Bring: 

  • Post-secondary education (degree or technologist diploma) in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Biology, Geotechnical Engineering, Forestry, Hydrogeology, or related fields (or equivalent experience)
  • Preferred 2+ years of relevant working experience in environmental compliance monitoring at a mine or construction site. Environmental compliance monitoring in other industry may be considered;
  • Remote mine site field work experience preferred, relevant experience working on the other industrial sites may be considered;  
  • Working knowledge of EQuIS or similar data-management software.
  • Demonstrated experience executing the above environmental tasks;
  • Effective communication skill is a must, both verbally and written;  
  • Proficient computer skills – Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.);  
  • Self-motivated, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team;  
  • Comply with Health and Safety requirements, and attention to detail is required; 
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kg;  
  • Ability to comfortably work outdoors in various weather conditions including rain, snow, heat, extreme cold, etc. is a must; 
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license; and 
  • Experience with operating equipment including ATVs, snowmobile, and power boats is an asset.

This position is a part of the Faro Mines project which is a unionized worksite and therefore governed by the Faro Union Collective Bargaining Agreement. Union membership and dues will apply.
