This opportunity entails leading a team of historians responsible for historic resource identification, documentation, evaluation, assessment, and compliance support for transportation and infrastructure projects. The History Team Lead oversees technical quality, staff development, project delivery, and client relationships while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local historic preservation regulations. This role serves as a technical leader, mentor, and strategic partner in the growth of HNTB’s Cultural Resources Section. This position serves as a leadership role responsible for directing, mentoring, and developing historians and cultural resources professionals. The History Team Lead participates in complex and high-profile projects, oversees technical quality, manages resources, and supports business development efforts within the cultural resources practice

What You’ll Do:

  • Oversees a team and the daily work assignments of one or more scientific disciplines.
  • Reviews technical reports and findings related to area of expertise which may consist of historic resource surveys, cultural resources investigations, archaeological inventory and excavation, and environmental science impacts.
  • Directs archaeological and environmental compliance investigations and is responsible for the planning, implementation, and reporting of scientific discipline projects.
  • Provides technical-scientific support and advice on environmental issues to project managers during the planning, design, and construction of proposed and in-progress projects.
  • Prioritizes and participates in the marketing and proposal preparation of potential opportunities or projects.
  • Leads the preparation of applications and supporting documents for local, state, and federal environmental permits as well as other regulatory compliance laws and regulations.
  • Organizes and participates in public meetings. Attends various meetings with clients, other engineering firms, and staff and may lead discussions on environmental science issues.
  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains staff, of discipline-specific team including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Coordinates schedules and approves timecards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology, Heritage Preservation, Historic Preservation, History, or related field and 6 years relevant experience, or
  • Master's Degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology, Heritage Preservation, Historic Preservation, History, or related field and 5 years of relevant experience

What We Prefer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, Historic Preservation, Heritage Preservation, Public History, Architectural History, or a related field and 6 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree in history, Historic Preservation, Heritage Preservation, Public History, Architectural History, or a related field and 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History or Historic Architecture. 
  • Advanced understanding of local, state, and federal regulations affecting historic resources, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4(f).
  • Advanced knowledge of National Register of Historic Places criteria and demonstrated experience evaluating historic resources for eligibility.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing historic resource survey reports, assessments of effects, mitigation documentation, historic property treatment plans, and related cultural resource documentation.
  • Experience developing and reviewing Section 106 and Section 4(f) documentation.
  • Experience providing mentorship for junior,  mid-level, and senior historians.
  • Experience in the development of scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans.
  • Ability to build strong client relationships and effectively coordinate with SHPOs, federal agencies, tribes, and other project stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies including accountability, interpersonal effectiveness, and a proven ability to drive results.
