Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

Orientation and Competency Development

  • Develop individualized orientation plans for new hires, transfers, travelers, and staff entering new clinical roles; set milestones and maintain orientation and competency records.
  • Support preceptors, conduct regular progress reviews, and partner with leadership to assess readiness for independent practice and identify additional learning needs.
  • Maintain role-specific initial and annual competencies through direct observation, return demonstration, simulation, and other appropriate validation methods.
  • Coordinate maternal-newborn cross-training for couplet care and ensure competency is documented before independent assignments.

Clinical Education and Emergency Readiness

  • Create an annual education plan based on staff learning needs, patient acuity, quality data, safety events, practice changes, and departmental priorities.
  • Provide skills days, bedside coaching, case reviews, and interdisciplinary simulations focused on obstetric hemorrhage, severe hypertension, maternal deterioration, fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, and newborn stabilization.
  • Coordinate applicable AWHONN education, fetal monitoring courses, neonatal education, and resuscitation training; teach only when appropriately authorized and credentialed.
  • Strengthen obstetric emergency readiness across the ED, ICU, respiratory therapy, and other partner departments through coordinated education and drills.
  • Provide education and competency support for clinical equipment, fetal monitoring systems, documentation workflows, and new therapies in collaboration with approved subject matter experts.

Evidence-Based Practice and Quality Improvement

  • Review current evidence and professional guidance with clinical experts and support updates to policies, procedures, patient education, and competencies through established approval processes.
  • Use audits, safety events, debriefs, and patient feedback to identify learning needs and assess whether education improves practice.
  • Support quality initiatives related to maternal-newborn safety, escalation of care, documentation, handoffs, infection prevention, and discharge readiness.
  • Lead education on Respectful Maternity Care, shared decision-making, informed consent, equitable communication, interpreter use, and trauma-informed care.

Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Serve as an accessible clinical education resource across shifts, provide constructive coaching, and foster a learning environment that encourages questions and timely escalation.
  • Partner with leadership and clinical experts to support professional certification, continuing education, career development, and succession planning for preceptors and clinical champions.
  • Maintain education calendars, attendance, competency records, and remediation follow-up; report progress and unresolved competency concerns to leadership.
  • Coordinate nursing continuing professional development through approved organizational processes while protecting staff and patient confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current RN license or multistate privilege authorizing practice in South Carolina, verified through the organization’s credentialing process.
  • Five years of recent nursing experience, including Labor and Delivery, with demonstrated experience as a preceptor, clinical coach, charge nurse, or educator.
  • Current BLS and NRP provider credentials, plus any additional credentials required for assigned duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess learning needs, teach adult learners, validate clinical skills, facilitate simulation, and communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing, nursing education, or a related field.
  • Specialty certification in inpatient obstetric nursing, electronic fetal monitoring, maternal-newborn nursing, neonatal nursing, or nursing professional development.
  • Experience with Level II NICU care, couplet care implementation, education program development, and quality improvement.
  • Current fetal monitoring education and relevant instructor credentials, such as NRP or AWHONN course instructor credentials, when appropriate to assigned teaching responsibilities.

Role Expectations and Evaluation

Maintain clinical knowledge and competency appropriate to assigned responsibilities. Protected education time is established with the director. Clinical support is provided within validated competence and agreed role expectations; routine staffing assignments should not displace planned orientation, competency validation, or required education. The role has no direct reports unless assigned. The educator provides learning feedback, while leadership retains responsibility for staffing and employment decisions.

Performance is evaluated through completion of orientation milestones, competencies, and required education; preceptor and learner feedback; follow-up on identified learning gaps; and contributions to practice improvement. Essential functions may be performed with reasonable accommodation
