JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Veteran and Military-Connected Student Success Coach works with prospective, new, and continuing Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, separated service members, Veterans, and their immediate dependent family members at Metropolitan Community College.

This position provides proactive, ongoing, individualized coaching and support to assist military-connected students through the complexities of the college environment. Working collaboratively with campus departments and community partners, the Coach connects students to academic, financial, personal, military, Veteran, and community resources while providing benefits navigation and support to help students remain on track with their individualized educational plans. The position also supports the daily operations of the Veteran & Military Resource Center and promotes student persistence, retention, degree completion, transfer, and career readiness.

The ideal candidate will have experience working and/or connection with military and student communities.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

• Provides ongoing, individualized coaching and student support services designed to help military-connected students persist, complete their educational goals, and successfully transition to college and civilian life. 
• Maintains a systematic approach to ensure regular contact and communication with assigned students at established touch points throughout the student lifecycle. 
• Maintains organized student follow-up to ensure students are progressing with their individualized educational plan and educational goals. 
• Monitors student progress and other indicators of success; proactively identifies barriers and collaborates with campus partners to provide timely interventions and referrals. 
• Assists students in identifying educational and career goals while providing guidance, resource navigation, and referrals related to DoD and VA education benefits, veteran and military-connected benefits and services, college resources, and community support programs.
• Coordinates and supports student workshops, orientations, outreach activities, veteran programming, and engagement opportunities that promote student success. 
• Works collaboratively with faculty, staff, VA representatives, military organizations, community agencies, and campus departments to resolve student concerns and connect students with appropriate academic, financial, military, Veteran, and community resources.
• Provides students with accurate information regarding academic programs, student support services, financial resources, military education benefits, and college policies and procedures. 
• Maintains electronic student records, case notes, communications, and required documentation in accordance with institutional and federal guidelines. 
• Supports the daily operations of the Veteran & Military Resource Center including communications, scheduling, event coordination, resource management, data entry, and administrative support. 
• Represents Metropolitan Community College and the Veteran & Military Resource Center at campus events, community outreach activities, military functions, and partnership meetings as assigned. 
• Participates in departmental meetings, professional development, advisory committees, task forces, outreach activities, orientations, and student events. 
• Attends work activities or programs as scheduled or assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned. 
   

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm

On-premise position located at South Omaha Campus with service to the MCC Offutt AFB Center as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of military culture, military-connected student support services, DoD and VA education benefits, military and Veteran resources, and student success practices.
• Proficient computer skills with the ability to learn new software.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other college supported systems.
• Excellent communication skills including active listening.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Skilled in project management. 
• Skilled in human relations, customer service, and diplomacy. 
• Ability to work well with minimal supervision in a team-orientated environment.
• Ability to demonstrate cooperation and professionalism in stressful situations.
• Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.
• Ability to evaluate programs and student success initiatives and implement changes as needed. 
• Ability to maintain accurate records, electronic case notes, and pay close attention to detail. 
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while functioning effectively within a collaborative team environment. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. 
• Three (3) years of professional experience providing coaching, advising, case management, resource navigation, student success services, or related support to military-connected students, Veterans, military families, or populations experiencing educational barriers. 
• Previous military service or demonstrated military affiliation/connection with experience working with military-connected individuals, Veterans, or military families is required. 
• Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience considered.
• Ability to travel between campuses for meetings or position responsibilities.
• Must pass a background check.
