The Community Lunch Team Leader coordinates and leads a team of volunteers to deliver a weekly community lunch program. The role is responsible for planning menus, managing available food resources, coordinating shopping within an approved budget, and leading volunteers in the preparation and serving of nutritious meals. The role supports a welcoming and inclusive environment where community members can connect over a quality meal.

Key responsibilities  

Program Planning, Food Resource Management, Meal Preparation and Service

  • Plan and coordinate a weekly community lunch menu.
  • Review donated food items and determine how they can be utilised in meal preparation.
  • Check produce available from the community garden and incorporate suitable vegetables, herbs and fruit into menu planning.
  • Ensure menus are nutritious, practical and appropriate for the number of attendees.
  • Monitor stock levels and identify additional ingredients required for each meal.
  • Oversee the preparation, cooking and presentation of meals.
  • Ensure meals are served within agreed timeframes

Provide Quality Service

  • Purchase food and kitchen supplies using approved vouchers provided by the program.
  • Manage spending within the allocated budget across the program term.
  • Support a welcoming dining experience for community members. Respond appropriately to participant questions and concerns.
  • Ensure kitchen, dining and storage areas are left clean and hygienic following service.

Volunteer Team Leadership

  • Lead and coordinate volunteers involved in the weekly community lunch.
  • Allocate tasks and provide clear direction to team members for food preparation, serving, cleaning and pack-up activities.
  • Foster a positive, welcoming and inclusive team environment.
  • Identify any training or support needs and communicate them to the supervisor.
  • Encourage teamwork and recognise volunteer contributions.

Administration & Budget

  • Maintain basic records relating to attendance, purchases and food donations as required.
  • Communicate regularly with the supervisor regarding program needs and outcomes.
  • Assist with rostering and volunteer coordination where required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information at all times.
  • Maintain records of purchases and provide receipts or documentation as required
  • Purchase food and kitchen supplies using approved vouchers provided by the program and manage spending within the allocated budget across the program term.
  • Advise the supervisor of any anticipated budget pressures or resource shortages.

Qualifications and skills (desired/required)

  • Experience in relevant field highly regarded.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring teams in a food services environment required.
  • Relevant qualifications as required ie Food Handling Certificate.
  • Experience in administration, use of Microsoft Word and Excel and customer service preferred.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
