Job Description Summary:

The Utilities Engineer provides engineering support for the design, optimization, projects, and continuous improvement of plant utility systems. This position supports manufacturing operations by participating in utility-related capital projects, sustainability initiatives, energy reduction programs, and infrastructure improvement efforts. The incumbent applies engineering principles to improve utility system performance, reliability, efficiency, regulatory compliance, and cost effectiveness while supporting business objectives.

The Utilities Engineer is an individual contributor role with Manufacturing, Maintenance, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Quality, Facilities, and external vendors to execute engineering projects and implement improvements to utility systems and related processes.

Essential Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Support

Provide engineering support for utility systems including compressed air, HVAC, refrigeration, chilled water, steam, boilers, water treatment systems, wastewater systems, electrical distribution, and other facility infrastructure. Analyze utility system performance and recommend improvements to enhance reliability, efficiency, capacity, and operational effectiveness. Investigate utility-related equipment and process issues using structured problem-solving methodologies and support implementation of corrective and preventive actions. Develop technical solutions for utility system improvements based on operational requirements, safety considerations, and business needs. Prepare engineering calculations, equipment specifications, technical reports, drawings, and project documentation. Assist in maintaining engineering documentation including P&IDs, utility maps, equipment records, and standard operating procedures.

Project Management & Capital Projects

Support the planning, execution, and completion of capital and expense projects related to utility systems and facility infrastructure. Prepare project scopes, technical specifications, cost estimates, and implementation plans for utility-related projects. Coordinate project activities with contractors, vendors, consultants, maintenance personnel, and internal stakeholders. Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to support successful project execution. Participate in equipment installations, commissioning activities, startup support, and project closeout documentation.

  • Assist in evaluating equipment proposals, vendor quotations, and technical designs to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Support procurement activities by providing technical recommendations and reviewing equipment specifications.
  • Track project milestones and provide regular updates regarding project status, challenges, and implementation progress.

Sustainability & Energy Management

Support sustainability initiatives designed to reduce energy consumption, water usage, waste generation, and overall environmental impact. Participate in the identification and implementation of energy conservation projects and utility optimization initiatives. Analyze utility consumption data and identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and cost reduction. Support projects related to water conservation, utility optimization, emissions reduction, and environmental stewardship. Collect, monitor, and report utility and sustainability performance metrics. Assist in developing business cases and cost-benefit analyses for sustainability and energy efficiency projects. Support environmental and sustainability programs through engineering evaluations and project implementation.a Responsible for the impact of EUR, WUR and CUR metrics of the plant.

Continuous Improvement

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on enhancing utility system performance and operational efficiency. Utilize Root Cause Analysis, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other problem-solving methodologies to support process improvements. Analyze utility system data and performance trends to identify opportunities for optimization and cost savings. Recommend and implement improvements that increase equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and improve resource utilization. Support standardization efforts and implementation of best engineering practices for utility systems.

Compliance, Quality & Safety

Ensure utility engineering activities comply with company policies, engineering standards, environmental regulations, and safety requirements. Support regulatory inspections, audits, and compliance reviews by maintaining accurate engineering documentation. Participate in risk assessments and safety reviews associated with utility systems and engineering projects. Support investigations related to equipment failures, utility interruptions, safety incidents, and environmental concerns. Promote safe work practices and ensure engineering projects are executed in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with Manufacturing, Maintenance, EHS, Quality, Facilities, and Finance teams to support operational objectives and project implementation. Provide technical support and recommendations related to utility systems and infrastructure improvements. Participate on cross-functional teams to support plant initiatives, operational improvements, and cost reduction opportunities. Communicate project status, engineering recommendations, and technical findings to stakeholders in a clear and effective manner.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related Engineering discipline.

Experience

  • 3+ years of engineering experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting utility systems and facility infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing or coordinating capital projects preferred.
  • Experience with sustainability, energy management, utility optimization, or environmental improvement projects preferred.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of BMS and EMS is desirable.
