The University Learning Center (ULC) is dedicated to providing academic support to The New School’s diverse student population through one-on-one tutoring sessions, workshops, and more. Tutors help students become stronger and more independent learners, so that they succeed in achieving their academic goals. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Tutor undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of math and economics subjects, including Quantitative Reasoning, Statistics, R, Tableau, SPSS, Economics, Accounting, Excel, Math Merchandising, Math Tools, and Calculus. 

  • Work with students of varying skill levels from demonstrating the basics to assisting with complex problems and a range of issues in between. 

  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.

  • Complete administrative tasks, such as writing brief descriptions of each session and emailing a brief summary of daily attendance.

  • Other opportunities include leading in-class workshops and/or specialized ULC workshops.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Tutors must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at the university and have at least one year of tutoring experience or teaching math/economics in a formal academic setting. 

  • Candidates must have taken Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, and Statistics. Potential tutors must have earned a grade of B+ or higher in the above mentioned mathematics courses relevant to the subject they will be tutoring. 

  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience is preferred.

  • Please send at least one faculty recommendation indicating your proficiency with specific software programs to [email protected].

  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality

  • Able to commit to 6 (or more) tutoring hours per week

  • Experience working with students with ADHD a plus

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience working with ESL and graduate-level students strongly preferred

  • Federal Work Study preferred

Work Mode: Hybrid #LI-DNI

Hourly Rate: $29.20/hr through August 31 (new pay rate will be determined by next collective bargaining agreement)

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW, Local 7902 and the University.

Support during sessions can entail demonstrating the basics to assisting with complex problems and a range of issues in between.
