TUNNEL MANAGER

Lead tunnel safety, operations and maintenance on the Northland Corridor Warkworth to Te Hana project and shape its long-term success with ACCIONA.

About the Opportunity 


Lead tunnel safety, maintenance, operational readiness and incident response on the Northland Corridor Warkworth to Te Hana project. You will report to the Maintenance and Operations Manager and manage the M&E/ITS Tunnel Engineer. During design and construction, you will be the link between delivery teams, maintenance and operations, NZTA and emergency services.


You will plan asset stewardship, drive compliance and keep safety at the centre of every decision. Shape how one of New Zealand's most significant transport projects performs for Northland road users for the long term. 


Key accountabilities:


  • Lead the safe, compliant operation and maintenance of the tunnels
  • Lead emergency preparedness and incident response with emergency services and NZTA
  • Plan lifecycle, inspection and testing programs for tunnel assetsConnect design, construction, maintenance and operations teams through delivery
  • Review designs and construction for budget, risk and constructability
  • Manage budgets, forecasts, contract obligations, extensions of time and claims
  • Develop the M&E/ITS Tunnel Engineer and build a safety-first team culture

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Degree in Engineering (civil, electrical or mechanical), asset management, or equivalent experience, with proven leadership of tunnel or complex M&E/ITS operations
  • Strong working knowledge of NZTA requirements and a track record delivering RAMS, TAMP/lifecycle planning, Safety File governance and BWoF/IQP coordination
  • Demonstrated safety leadership, including incident response (CIMS) and investigations (ICAM)
  • Commercial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, contract governance and claims management
  • Proven ability to build, coach and mentor high-performing teams
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working alongside ATOC and emergency services, and confidence using AWM, GIS and digital tools to support decision-making
