As a Transmission Planning Engineer Intern you will be working in the Transmission Planning group to develop and test solutions that improve future transmission system reliability and capacity. As a Transmission Planning intern you will:

  • Support steady-state power-flow and short-circuit studies using industry tools such as PSS®E, TARA, and DSA Tools

  • Assist with transmission interconnection and reactive-compensation studies for new large load and generation

  • Help build and maintain the steady-state, dynamics, and short-circuit representations of the AES transmission system, keeping base cases current with topology, equipment, and rating changes

  • Support NERC modeling data processes — MOD-032 data collection, FAC-008 facility ratings — and model validation against actual system performance

  • Gain exposure to transmission operations planning, outage coordination, and RTO submission systems (MISO CROW, PJM eDART)

  • Learn how AES works within the MISO and PJM markets and the NERC/FERC regulatory framework

  • Attend site visits to substations and other facilities to see transmission infrastructure firsthand and learn how complex systems are built and operated

  • Work in an agile, collaborative environment, partnering with engineers, technicians, and regulatory experts to solve complex problems

  • Participate in formalized AES-specific learning opportunities to further your knowledge toward accelerating the responsible energy transition

  • Network with peers, AES leaders, and like-minded employees through dedicated events, lunch-and-learns, and speaker series

  • Actively engage in open discussions to help identify ways AES can better prepare for the future of energy

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field

  • Coursework in power systems, circuits, or electric machines

  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn

  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing

Highly Desired:

  • Exposure to power-flow or short-circuit software (PSS®E, TARA, ASPEN, CAPE, DSA Tools, or similar)

  • Familiarity with the NERC/FERC/PJM/MISO regulatory landscape

  • Coursework or project experience in power system analysis
