Newlands Closure Project is looking for a motivated and experienced Technical Services Superintendent to join our Technical Services Team. Following the completion of coal production in February 2023, Newlands has entered an exciting new phase as we rehabilitate and progressively close a mine with more than forty years of operational history. As one of Queensland’s largest rehabilitation projects, we are focused on setting a high standard for safe, practical and sustainable mine closure.


Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the Technical Services Superintendent will provide leadership across technical planning, civil design, project delivery and quality assurance activities.


In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Providing strong leadership, direction and mentoring to the Technical Services team, building capability, accountability and effective collaboration across disciplines.
  • Leading the development and delivery of the Mid-Term Schedule, including Budget and Life of Mine / Life of Project planning horizons.
  • Coordinating technical planning activities to ensure rehabilitation, earthworks and closure projects are appropriately scoped, sequenced, resourced and integrated with operational requirements.
  • Providing oversight of civil and rehabilitation design, ensuring designs are practical, constructable, cost-effective and aligned with approved closure outcomes.
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate QA/QC processes for civil construction and rehabilitation works, including design reviews, construction conformance, survey validation, quality documentation and handover requirements.
  • Managing projects from planning and design through to execution, monitoring scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality and progress against agreed objectives.
  • Working closely with operational teams, contractors and other stakeholders to resolve technical and construction issues and support effective project delivery.
  • Managing and coordinating external consultants, contractors and technical service providers, ensuring deliverables meet required standards, timelines and commercial expectations.
  • Understanding technical data systems, reconciliations, progress measurement and end-of-month reporting to provide accurate and timely information for decision-making.
  • Reviewing construction performance against designs and schedules and identifying opportunities to improve productivity, cost effectiveness and rehabilitation outcomes.
  • Providing consistent technical support across site departments and coordinating information required to achieve or exceed annual rehabilitation and closure plans.
  • Supporting continuous improvement in planning, design, construction methodology, quality management and project delivery systems

Requirements for the role include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Project Management or another relevant discipline, or equivalent demonstrated industry experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to develop, mentor and coordinate technical professionals and influence multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in a similar technical, engineering, construction or project leadership role, preferably within mining, civil earthworks, rehabilitation, infrastructure or major project environments.
  • Strong understanding of civil construction design principles, earthworks and construction methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience with construction QA/QC, including design conformance, inspection, verification, survey reconciliation and quality documentation.
  • Demonstrated project management capability, including planning, scheduling, scope management, contractor management, risk management, cost control and delivery against milestones.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical requirements into practical delivery outcomes.
  • Experience with Dozer Push, Truck and Shovel, bulk earthworks or rehabilitation activities is desirable.

You will be a practical and collaborative leader who is equally comfortable developing long-term plans, reviewing technical designs and working with operational teams to solve construction challenges in the field.

You will bring a strong focus on people leadership, engineering quality and disciplined project delivery, with the ability to balance technical requirements, constructability, cost, schedule and rehabilitation outcomes.

This role provides an opportunity to play a key leadership role in one of Queensland’s most significant mine rehabilitation and closure projects and to help shape how large-scale rehabilitation is planned, designed and delivered.
