About this Summer 2027 Internship - Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) role at General Matter

General Matter · Onsite · Los Angeles, CA

About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our goal is to design, build, and operate the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services in the United States.

Our mission is to restore America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel—fuel that will power AI, advanced manufacturing, critical industries, and the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Ultimately, our work will help power national ambitions and enable a high-energy society.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by top-tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) intern at General Matter, you will gain hands-on experience supporting health, safety, and environmental protection efforts for our enrichment technology development and pilot-scale operations. In this internship, you will work alongside experienced EHS professionals to help develop practical, fit-for-purpose programs for managing chemical, radiological, and industrial hazards. Your work will contribute directly to our mission while building your understanding of regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and safety in a fast-moving startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs and procedures.
  • Assist in identifying electrical hazards and conducting risk assessments for equipment, labs, and operations.
  • Help create, review, and maintain equipment-specific energy control procedures and documentation.
  • Help develop and deliver safety training materials related to electrical safety and LOTO practices.
  • Support electrical hazard assessments, labeling efforts, and PPE evaluations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by engaging with employees and reinforcing safe work practices.

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field (Junior or Senior standing preferred).
  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc).
  • Strong understanding of Health and Safety fundamentals.
  • Ability to assess occupational health and safety risks and apply health and safety principles to develop effective risk mitigation solutions.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills for audits, inspections, and procedure development.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with electrical safety standards such as Control of Hazardous Energy and NFPA 70E.
  • Hands-on or academic experience with LOTO procedures, energy isolation methods, and permit systems.
  • Knowledge of arc flash hazards, shock risk boundaries, and PPE selection.
  • Experience developing or delivering safety training or presentations.
  • Experience with hazard identification, risk assessments, or safety audits.

About General Matter

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our mission is to restore US leadership in nuclear fuel. This fuel will power AI, manufacturing, and other critical industries. It will enable the next generation of reactors and the reactors powering ~20% of the US grid today. Ultimately, it will power our national ambitions.

If we don’t do it, no one will.  Half a century ago, the US held a majority of all global enrichment capacity. Today we are forced to rely on foreign powers and their state-backed, state-controlled entities for the nuclear fuel that powers nearly 20% of our nation’s grid.

We are fixing this. By uniting the nation’s finest minds from technology, nuclear engineering, national security, and finance, we are building a new way to enrich uranium, here at home. The fuel we are enriching will be cheaper, more reliable, and more abundant than ever before, and it will result in a stronger America.

As we build our team we are seeking the highest caliber engineers, technologists, creative minds, and numbers savants. We offer high standards, extreme ownership, copious autonomy, deep trust, and zero politics. We believe that despite our ambitious mission, our chances of success are great. If you are someone who will further tilt those odds in our favor, we want to talk to you.
