About this Summer 2027 Internship - Electrical Engineering (Buildings) role at General Matter

General Matter · Onsite · Los Angeles, CA

About the company

General Matter enriches uranium.

We are designing, building, and operating the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US.

In the process, we are restoring America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.

Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume.  Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.

Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable.  We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.

We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms.

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

We’re looking for an Electrical Engineering (Intern) on the Buildings team with a strong interest in electrical systems design for industrial and mission‑critical facilities to join our growing engineering team. You will collaborate with experienced engineers and designers to learn the fundamentals of power, lighting, and low‑voltage systems for manufacturing plants and other large‑scale infrastructure for industrial buildings. This is an excellent opportunity for a current student eager to gain exposure to high‑reliability, energy‑intensive facility design in the AEC industry.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and coordination of electrical power systems in BIM for industrial and critical facilities.
  • Help perform load calculations, circuit analysis, and panel schedules, and support equipment layouts under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Support the development of medium‑voltage distribution networks and backup systems, including assisting with the draft of single line diagrams.
  • Contribute to lighting design studies, grounding layouts, and protective device coordination tasks.
  • Learn and apply BIM modeling using Revit and AutoCAD to help integrate electrical designs with mechanical and structural disciplines.
  • Assist in preparing documentation, specifications, and construction drawings for large‑scale projects.
  • Participate in workflow automation and data analytics using visual programming (Dynamo, Grasshopper) or coding (Python, C#).
  • Effectively communicate technical ideas and progress updates within multidisciplinary project teams.

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Junior or Senior standing preferred).
  • Foundational coursework in electrical power systems, machines, circuits, and building services engineering.
  • Exposure to BIM modeling software, such as Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Academic understanding of power distribution, load analysis, and basic electrical design fundamentals.
  • Interest in learning lighting and energy modeling tools (e.g., Dialux, or IES‑VE).
  • Interest and/or experience in AI tools for design, visual programming (Dynamo, Grasshopper), coding (Python, C#), and/or open‑source projects.
  • A proactive, collaborative attitude with a strong desire to learn how complex industrial systems operate.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and collaboratively across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with electrical codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE).
  • Exposure to power system studies, short‑circuit analysis, or relay protection through university labs or projects.
  • Experience with renewable integration, generator systems, or UPS and battery energy storage.
  • Understanding of data center electrical topologies (Uptime Tier standards, redundancy design).

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range for this internship is $30–$40 per hour, depending on the candidate’s current standing in school (i.e. sophomore, senior).
Interns will receive a monthly housing stipend, and are eligible for overtime pay. Please note that the stated hourly range is an estimate and may be adjusted based on market conditions, business needs, or other factors.

About General Matter

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our mission is to restore US leadership in nuclear fuel. This fuel will power AI, manufacturing, and other critical industries. It will enable the next generation of reactors and the reactors powering ~20% of the US grid today. Ultimately, it will power our national ambitions.

If we don’t do it, no one will.  Half a century ago, the US held a majority of all global enrichment capacity. Today we are forced to rely on foreign powers and their state-backed, state-controlled entities for the nuclear fuel that powers nearly 20% of our nation’s grid.

We are fixing this. By uniting the nation’s finest minds from technology, nuclear engineering, national security, and finance, we are building a new way to enrich uranium, here at home. The fuel we are enriching will be cheaper, more reliable, and more abundant than ever before, and it will result in a stronger America.

As we build our team we are seeking the highest caliber engineers, technologists, creative minds, and numbers savants. We offer high standards, extreme ownership, copious autonomy, deep trust, and zero politics. We believe that despite our ambitious mission, our chances of success are great. If you are someone who will further tilt those odds in our favor, we want to talk to you.
