As a Staff Software Engineer at Pinterest, you will help define and drive the technical direction of the web development layer that product engineers build with, so teams can ship features more quickly, reliably, and consistently. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about web architecture, developer experience, and building scalable foundations for product development. While this role will have a strong focus on data fetching, it will also contribute more broadly across the systems, frameworks, and best practices that enable product engineers to build high-quality web experiences at scale including code health and our design system.
What you’ll do:
- Define and drive technical direction for foundational web capabilities that product engineers use directly, with a primary focus on data fetching.
- Assess the current ecosystem of frameworks, tooling, and patterns on the web client, and identify the highest-impact opportunities for improvement.
- Lead platform investments that simplify development, reduce friction, and improve consistency across the product engineering experience.
- Partner across product, platform, design, and infrastructure teams to align on scalable technical patterns and long-term architecture.
- Shape the evolution of data fetching in our hybrid GraphQL/REST environment, while contributing more broadly to framework adoption, paved paths, and code health.
- Establish best practices, reusable abstractions, and technical guidance that raise quality and improve maintainability across the web organization.
- Mentor engineers and influence technical direction through architecture reviews, design discussions, and cross-team leadership.
- Contribute to a high-scale web platform serving millions of users and enabling hundreds of engineers to build product experiences effectively.
What we’re looking for:
- 8+ years of web software engineering experience building, designing and evolving client-side data architecture in large-scale web applications.
- Deep understanding of tradeoffs in caching, consistency, latency, reliability, and developer ergonomics in modern web clients.
- Expert-level coding skills in languages like javascript or typescript (optional python), with ability to write production-quality code.
- Knowledge on Node.js, server-side rendering techniques and GraphQL frameworks like Relay.
- Strong experience working across both GraphQL and REST, with the technical judgment to define clear patterns for how and when each should be used.
- Proven ability to evaluate complex systems, define pragmatic architectural direction, and lead cross-team execution on foundational platform investments that improve developer productivity and scalability.
- Experience establishing reusable patterns, technical standards, and documentation that improve consistency and maintainability across teams.
- Strong technical leadership and mentorship skills, with a track record of raising the engineering bar through guidance, feedback, and influence.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to align stakeholders and influence technical direction across organizational boundaries.
- Passion for web architecture and interest in staying current with evolving patterns, tools, and best practices in client-side data systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
