About this Staff Software Engineer, Financial Platform role at Credit Genie
Company
Credit Genie is a mobile-first financial wellness platform designed to help individuals take control of their financial future. We leverage artificial intelligence to provide personalized insights and are building a financial ecosystem by offering tools and services that provide instant access to cash, and building credit. Our goal is to empower every customer to achieve long-term financial stability.
Founded in 2019 by Ed Harycki, former Swift Capital Founder (acquired by PayPal in 2017). Backed by Khosla Ventures and led by industry pioneers from companies such as; PayPal, Square, and Cash App, we are well positioned to build the future of inclusive finance through cutting-edge technology and customer-centric solutions.
Overview
The Financial Platform team owns the systems that move money at Credit Genie and the connections that make it possible: cash advances, repayments, refunds, bank account linking, debit card management, and the ledgering and reconciliation that keep every dollar accounted for. When these systems are wrong, customers lose money and trust; when they are right, nobody notices. That is the bar.
As the Staff Engineer on this team, you will set the technical direction for our money movement platform and raise the engineering bar for the team around you. You will own the hardest correctness and scale problems we have, make the foundational architecture decisions that the platform will live with for years, and be the engineer the rest of the team looks to for how quality work gets done. This is a rare chance to join a fast-growing fintech startup where your work directly protects and improves the financial well-being of our users.
What You'll Do
Set the Technical Direction: Own the architecture and long-term technical roadmap for our money movement systems. Drive the decisions on how we structure payment orchestration, ledgering, and reconciliation as transaction volume grows, and see those decisions through to production.
Build Financial Systems That Are Provably Correct: Design for the properties money movement demands: idempotent operations, exactly-once semantics, auditable state transitions, automated reconciliation, and invariant monitoring that catches discrepancies before customers do.
Design, Build, and Scale: Own backend systems end-to-end, from architecture through deployment and production operation, ensuring high performance, security, and scalability as our financial products grow.
Raise the Bar for the Team: Set the standard for engineering quality across the Financial Platform team. Lead design reviews, mentor senior and mid-level engineers, and establish practices for testing, observability, and operational excellence that outlast any single project.
Own the Bank and Card Integrations: Own the platform's connections to the outside financial world: bank account linking through data aggregators, debit card lifecycle management, and processor integrations. Build abstractions that keep these third-party dependencies reliable, observable, and swappable.
Own Production: Treat reliability of money movement as a first-class engineering problem. Lead incident response for the platform, drive post-incident hardening, and build the monitoring and safeguards that make failures rare and recoverable.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, compliance, risk, data science, and our banking and processor partners to ship features that balance speed to market with the rigor regulated money movement requires.
Requirements
8+ years of experience designing, building, and scaling high-performance backend systems in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Direct experience building and operating financial platform systems at scale: payments, money movement, lending, ledgering, billing, or banking infrastructure handling high volumes of real customer funds.
Deep fluency in the correctness patterns financial software demands: idempotency, distributed transactions, double-entry accounting, reconciliation, retry safety, and auditability.
A track record of setting technical direction for a team: you have owned the architecture of a significant system, driven the roadmap to evolve it, and brought other engineers along through design reviews and mentorship.
High ownership as a default. You treat the systems you build as yours end-to-end, from design through incident response, and you raise problems and fix them without waiting to be asked.
Expertise in architecting and productionizing large-scale distributed systems.
Strong understanding of data privacy, compliance, and secure coding practices, with experience designing resilient, reliable systems that meet high security and regulatory standards.
Structured thinking and analytical rigor. You break down intricate systems, identify flaws, and implement scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.
Nice to Have
Hands-on experience with payment rails and partners: ACH, RTP, card networks, push-to-debit, or direct processor and bank integrations.
Experience with bank data aggregators (Plaid, MX, Finicity) or card issuing and debit card management platforms.
Experience in regulated consumer fintech (lending, credit, or banking products).
Experience with event-driven architectures and TypeScript/Node.js services.
Experience leading incident response and building invariant or anomaly monitoring for financial data.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools to raise the quality and velocity of a team, not just your own output.
