About this Staff Software Developer role at Tempo

Tempo · Remote · Canada

With over 30,000 customers, including a third of Fortune 500 companies, Tempo is trusted by organizations across the globe to make their workflows work better.

We create a suite of integrated solutions for time management, resource planning, budget management, roadmapping, program management, reporting and more. We create the tech that enables the modern team to deliver – for every step from first vision to value.

Since our beginning in 2007 as a project to make a time-tracking tool to help a client – Tempo has expanded to become the #1 time management add-on for Jira, and we have developed and acquired a multitude of tools to become one of the most trusted names in the Atlassian ecosystem.

We want everyone to work better – but we also want to be a tech company with a heart. Join us as we continuously innovate our award-winning products, create new solutions, and help the world work smarter, not harder.

About the role:

We are looking for a passionate and experienced software developer to join our Platform Team. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the foundational infrastructure that powers all of Tempo's cloud products – Tempo Timesheets, Capacity Planner, and Financial Manager for Jira Cloud. As a Staff Developer, you'll drive technical decisions, mentor engineers across teams, and ensure our platform is scalable, reliable, and developer-friendly. The best fit for our team is someone who thinks holistically about systems, cares deeply about developer experience, and wants to solve complex infrastructure challenges at scale.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, build, and maintain platform infrastructure including build systems, and shared libraries across Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, and TypeScript

  • Own and evolve gRPC protocol definitions and language bindings that enable cross-service communication

  • Develop and maintain infrastructure libraries for messaging (RabbitMQ), caching (Redis), and data persistence (DynamoDB, MongoDB)

  • Build and operate core platform services including organization management, tenant data lifecycle, and Jira Cloud integration

  • Drive technical standards, architectural decisions, and best practices across the engineering organization

  • Mentor and guide developers across multiple teams on platform usage and best practices

  • Improve developer experience through better tooling, documentation, and self-service capabilities

  • Ensure platform reliability, performance, and security through monitoring, observability, and operational excellence

  • Collaborate with product teams to understand their needs and translate them into platform capabilities

  • Lead technical initiatives that span multiple teams and services

  • Write efficient, readable, maintainable, and testable code with comprehensive test coverage

  • Review code and provide constructive feedback that elevates the entire team

Who you are:

  • Has 8+ years of experience in server-side development with strong expertise in Java and/or Kotlin

  • Has experience building and maintaining platform/infrastructure systems at scale

  • Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, including messaging patterns, caching strategies, and data consistency

  • Strong experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration

  • Extensive experience with AWS services (DynamoDB, Lambda, S3, etc.)

  • Experience with gRPC/Protocol Buffers and designing cross-language APIs

  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Java/Kotlin, Go, Python, TypeScript) – ability to work across the stack

  • Experience with message queuing systems (RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar)

  • Strong database skills including SQL, MongoDB, and DynamoDB with focus on performance optimization

  • Experience building developer tools, SDKs, or internal platforms

  • Track record of driving technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction

  • Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences

  • Experience mentoring engineers and fostering technical growth across teams

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

  • Strong understanding of Computer Science fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, system design

  • Upper-intermediate spoken and written English

  • Ability to work autonomously, make sound technical decisions, and drive projects to completion

  • Experience with observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, etc.) and operational best practices

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Atlassian ecosystem and Jira Cloud development

  • Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform tools

  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and optimization

  • Background in SRE practices and production operations

  • Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools
