About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on Staff Engineer to own business metrics engineering across MOVE the definitions, semantic layer, instrumentation, and dashboards that turn our data into decisions the whole company trusts. You will be the technical owner of what the numbers mean and whether they can be trusted, spanning technical, product, and business metrics. Working closely with our Data Engineering team (who own the core pipelines, warehouse, and platform), you will build the metrics layer and reporting surface on top of that foundation — standardizing definitions, eliminating conflicting numbers, and instrumenting the product so the right signals exist in the first place. 

Core Competence

• Deep expertise in analytics engineering — semantic/metrics layers, dimensional modeling, and transformation logic
• Ability to define trustworthy business metrics and translate ambiguous questions into models and dashboards
• Working knowledge of anomaly detection across transactional and behavioral data for data-quality and metric integrity
• Fluency across the stack — enough software engineering depth to instrument products and integrate with services, not just query data
• Own the design and operation of fraud/anomaly-detection signals across MOVE's data and business metrics.
• Strong product and business sense — understands funnel, conversion, unit economics, and what actually drives the OTA
• Strong debugging, data-quality, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to own and evolve the team's data and analytics technical roadmap
• Proficiency in AI-driven tools and processes to boost developer productivity and automation

Key Responsibilities

Business Metrics, Analytics & Dashboards

• Partner with product, commercial, finance, fraud management  and payments teams to define the KPIs and business metrics that leadership relies on
• Build and maintain self-serve dashboards and a single source of truth for reporting; eliminate metric drift and conflicting numbers
• Instrument the platform for the events and signals needed to measure funnel, conversion, ancillary attach, and unit economics

Anomaly Detection & Data Integrity

• Own the design and operation of anomaly-detection signals across MOVE's business-risk data — pipeline failures, data-quality breaks, schema drift and/or irregularity , and unexpected shifts in business metrics
• Build and operationalize real-time and near-real-time detection on transactional and behavioral data, balancing sensitivity against alert noise
• Establish feedback loops with data consumers to triage anomalies, investigate root causes, and measure impact on reporting accuracy
• Define standards for how anomalies are surfaced, escalated, and acted on across the platform

Cross-cutting

• Make informed trade-offs between cost, latency, freshness, reliability, and speed to market
• Define and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and best practices for data and analytics engineering
• Mentor engineers on modeling, metrics design, code quality, and operational excellence
• Define and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and best practices for analytics engineering
• Embed observability into data systems; ensure pipelines and signals are monitored, alertable, and debuggable
• Ensure data systems adhere to security, compliance, PII, and data-privacy standards
• Make Conviva/equivalent dashboard as the source of truth for all stakeholders.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data, or a related field
• 8–14 years of engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership, staff, or senior analytics/architect role
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL and Python, and with transformation/modeling tooling (dbt or similar)
• Strong software engineering background — able to instrument products and integrate with backend services (Java, Node.js, Golang, or similar), not solely an analyst
• Deep experience designing semantic/metrics layers and dimensional data models
• Experience building metrics/BI layers and dashboards (Looker, Tableau, Metabase, or similar)
• Working knowledge of cloud data warehouses/lakehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, or similar) as a consumer and modeler
• Solid knowledge of relational (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (Redis, MongoDB) databases
• Familiarity with event systems and instrumentation (Kafka, GCP Pub/Sub, product analytics/event tracking)
• Hands-on with observability and data-quality tooling: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, ELK, Great Expectations, or similar
• Strong understanding of data security, PII handling, and privacy/compliance requirements
• Excellent debugging skills and the ability to diagnose issues across the metrics and data stack
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow engineering teams
• Strong product and business sense; experience partnering with product and commercial stakeholders
• Experience working in e-commerce, payments, or the travel domain is a strong plus
• Startup experience is strongly preferred

• Data Engineering owns the core ingestion pipelines, warehouse/lakehouse, and data platform infrastructure
• This role owns the layer above it — the metrics/semantic layer, business logic, instrumentation standards, and dashboards — and partners with Data Engineering as the primary consumer and collaborator
• You define what metrics mean and how they're modeled and surfaced; you work with Data Engineering on how the underlying data is moved, used and stored
