Job Title: SSNA EC&I Technical Lead

Working Pattern: 37 hours days

Working location: Derby

We have an exciting opportunity for an EC&I Technical Lead to join the Reactor EC&I Chief Engineering team within the Submarines business.

As the technical lead for the SSNA EC&I programme, you will be responsible for managing and governing the SSNA EC&I design, working closely with the EC&I design and whole plant teams. You will report directly to the EC&I Assistant Chief Engineer and assist in maintaining product safety and implementing engineering governance and assurance across all SSNA EC&I products.

What you will be doing:

The SSNA EC&I Technical Lead will have the following responsibilities.

  • Provide technical programme management and engineering leadership of the EC&I engineering teams assigned to them, ensuring compliance with product safety policies & engineering processes.
  • Use systems engineering principles to capture, understand, agree, document, and communicate requirements for the EC&I system and sub-system layers with traceability between the enterprise, business/product, and components layers.  
  • Lead and support EC&I in the design of the EC&I system and sub-system to deliver all technical attributes in line with customer and business commitments including, drumbeat, availability, delivery confidence, warfighting capability and capability sustainment. 
  • Define the IPTs scope and deliverables to ensure an EC&I system and sub-system solution that is consistent with the project requirements and demonstrated through structured verification.
  • Ensure an integrated programme of work is defined for EC&I and effectively managed to meet the overall programme requirements.
  • Manage SSNA EC&I technical risk on behalf of the EC&I CE team to ensure overall business and programme risk levels are acceptable.
  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and resolution of technical issues on behalf of the EC&I Assistant Chief Engineer to the system, sub-system and product design teams.
  • Deploy and maintain effective physical and functional interface management.
  • Manage the interface between EC&I R&T and Strategic Capability to enable the introduction of new technology onto reactor SSNA EC&I to meet the programme objectives.
  • Representing the EC&I Assistant Chief Engineer as required.
  • Assist the EC&I Assistant Chief Engineer with assuring and managing product safety through compliant use of proven processes and lead closure strategies to timely completion.

  • An experienced engineer, ideally within nuclear, or within a heavily regulated industry.
  • Experience of electrical & electronics design, justification, and safety case production of complex engineering systems. 
  • A good understanding of fundamental engineering principles and able to make rational risk-based decisions using analysis, empirical data and engineering judgement and experience.
  • The ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and influence a broad range of stakeholders, both internal and external, to deliver the business and project outcomes.
  • Be a challenging force to enable simplification and improvements to achieve business and programme outcomes.
  • Strong planning and organising skills to manage short-, medium- and long-term activities and deliverables.
  • Engineering degree in electrical and electronics, aerospace or equivalent STEM based degree with experience.
  • Known for challenging and positively disrupting the status quo to strategic benefit for customers/functions/partners/stakeholders & suppliers
  • Chartered Engineering Status (preferred)

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines business an individual has to hold a Security Check clearance.  Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you do not currently already have this in place.  Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets we can only progress applications from individuals who are a UK national or, in MoD approved cases, a dual national.
