Job Overview:  
A role on the Packaging team is an opportunity to create original solutions that improve function, design, quality, sustainability, and accessibility. As a packaging engineering expert, you will stay ahead of industry trends, materials, and technologies to develop packaging that delivers exceptional value. Our team owns the design and engineering of Target-owned brand packaging. Under the direction of Packaging Leadership and in close partnership with product, creative, brand, and sourcing teams, you will develop packaging solutions for assigned categories, brands, businesses, or guest segments and manage front end development. You will ensure packaging supports brand priorities, merchandising plans, assortment strategies, price points, product requirements, and guest needs. 

This role is performed on-site 4 days per week from our Downtown MN campus.
 
As a Senior Engineer, you will: 

• Research packaging materials, technologies, and industry trends and present opportunities to partners  

• Develop packaging design & innovation strategies across multiple brands and businesses 

• Commercialize innovative packaging solutions in partnership with category packaging engineers 

• Create CAD models and prototypes and test them with end users 

• Analyze data on cost, sustainability, damage, and guest experience 

• Independently manage multiple projects, prioritize requests, and meet deadlines 

• Build and maintain strong connections with the packaging industry and supplier partners 

• Prepare and deliver professional presentations to business leaders and external partners 

Requirements: 

• Four-year degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience 

• Seven to ten years of experience; experience with mass consumer goods preferred 

• Deep expertise in materials, processes and design of paperboard and corrugate retail packaging 

• Knowledge of materials and processes for plastic part production 

• Deep expertise with Artios CAD and SOLIDWORKS, CSWA (Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate) preferred  

• Experience identifying and implementing new packaging technologies, materials, or processes 

• Curiosity and passion for innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement 

• Strong written and verbal presentation skills 

• Ability to work in the office four or more days per week 

• Sample portfolio or relevant professional work
