Job Description Summary

As the Sr AVP of NF Quantitative Risk Management, you’ll oversee the design and implementation of hedge strategies for the financial guarantees for all NF products across our protection, investment, and retirement business. You’ll manage collaboration across a variety of functions to ensure our hedging and related strategies are in line with our corporate vision and marketplace strategy. You’ll also oversee the development, maintenance, and execution of the NF Economic Scenario Generator, which is a key resource for virtually all decision making for the Nationwide Enterprise.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: 

• Oversees the development, implementation, and reporting associated with all NF hedging programs including Guaranteed benefits associated with Variable Annuities, Fixed Index Annuities, and Indexed Universal Life. Accountable for results of both variable annuity and indexed program hedge programs, including the modeling, quantification, and risk management exposure.
• Oversees the development and maintenance of stochastic, state of the art GPU-based modeling infrastructure used for pricing, risk management, static and dynamic hedging.
• Designs and evaluates quantitative strategies to support our life and annuity businesses, including volatility control, fund mechanisms, and index creation.
• Partners with product leadership to develop and refine product strategies, as well as the Office of Investments to develop and implement new indices for policyholders. Oversees ability to efficiently and effectively hedge all indices we offer to policyholders.
• Evaluates new tools for risk management, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques for purposes such as simulating hedging projections. Partners with third party vendors and consultants to continue developing hedge platform.
• Oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Enterprise Economic Scenario Generator, which is used for all financial projections in decision making across the Enterprise.  
• Networks with outside organizations to implement and evolve state of the art risk management and hedging practices.
• Oversees associate management including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement, and corrective actions for direct and possibly indirect reports.
• May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships:  Reports to VP, NFS Chief Actuary. Leads a team of six direct reports and three or more indirect reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences: 

Education:  Undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Finance, Actuarial Science, or field with similar mathematical training preferred.   

License/Certification/Designation: Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) required. Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Certificate of Quantitative Finance (CQF) or similar financial engineering credential preferred.     

Experience:  Typically, ten or more years of experience in actuarial related work.  

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:  Extensive knowledge of risk management practices including financial engineering, stochastic processes, derivatives, actuarial principles, and mathematics. Broad knowledge of the financial services industry, including an understanding of life insurance accounting and finance theory. Excellent communication skills with ability to work effectively with outside audiences, senior management, and internal partners.  

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
