About the Role:
Wiley is looking for a strong Solution Architect to join our ReX Review & Screening team in Iași, Romania. Research Exchange (ReX) is Wiley's publishing platform, built from components such as Review, Screening, and Commissions. As a Solution Architect, you will provide a holistic view of, and take ownership of, its infrastructure and supporting technologies, ensuring solutions meet business requirements and strategic direction for the long term in a secure, scalable, and cost-effective way. You'll partner closely with senior leaders, engineering and delivery teams, product managers, and development teams across these components to keep roadmaps aligned and guide well-considered technology decisions, all while remaining pragmatic.
Responsibilities
- Provide a holistic view of, and ownership over, the platform's core and supporting technologies, building consensus on its future technical direction.
- Make high-level technical decisions that influence all development teams, defining and communicating architectural solutions through code, where appropriate.
- Understand the business context and vision for ReX, partnering with product teams to propose solutions that align with our direction.
- Guide a cohesive technical direction across ReX's core components, helping each development team make well-aligned architectural choices as the platform evolves.
- Lead scoping, architecture, and design across cloud and on-premises technologies, and drive multi-year architecture roadmaps.
- Develop solutions using a cloud-first approach on AWS; establish strategies for secure identity, authentication, and authorization architectures; and lead security projects from conception through implementation.
- Evaluate integration requirements for business solutions, ensuring adherence to architecture standards and information security policies.
- Educate, support, and mentor development teams through training and hands-on collaboration, focusing on building the teams' own capabilities rather than creating dependency on you.
- Continuously improve technical processes and practices, and implement quality assurance guidelines for testing, code quality, and deployment.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, contribute to technology strategy and roadmaps, and maintain documentation of architectural decisions and standards.
- Be part of the wider Research Architecture Group, contributing to pan-Wiley architecture policies, and conduct periodic skills gap analyses and training.
Requirements:
Education & Experience
- Degree in Computer Science or a related field (MSc preferred), or equivalent demonstrated experience; a minimum of 12 years in the software industry, including several years in an architecture or technical leadership capacity.
- Proven track record in software and systems architecture and event-driven microservices, with deep expertise in the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem and cloud-native technologies on AWS.
Technical Expertise
- Deep expertise across our stack (Node.js, TypeScript, Express, React, and GraphQL), with a proven track record of architecting event-driven, service-based systems.
- Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) running on AWS, as well as CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code practices.
- Strong understanding of cloud delivery models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and observability and monitoring practices for distributed, service-based architectures.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Agile and Lean methodologies; a strong grasp of clean code principles, continuous delivery, and managing technical debt.
- Familiarity with GraphQL schema design and message/event-based integration patterns; AWS certification (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Solutions Architect) is a plus.

The range below represents Wiley's good faith and reasonable estimate of the base pay for this role at the time of posting roles in the United Kingdom, Canada, USA, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, or Spain. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall within the range, however the ultimate salary offered for this role may be higher or lower and will be set based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
