About this Software Development Manager role at Stedi

Stedi · Remote · Remote in the USA

We're building a new healthcare clearinghouse

Stedi is building the first new healthcare clearinghouse in decades. In the healthcare sector, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) requires that all insurance payers exchange transactions such as claims, eligibility checks, prior authorizations, and remittances using a standardized EDI format called X12 HIPAA. Clearinghouses process the majority of these transactions, offering consolidated connectivity to carriers and providers. Until Stedi, the space was occupied entirely by a small group of legacy players, built on outdated, often pre-internet technology.

Stedi is the world's only programmable healthcare clearinghouse. By offering modern API interfaces alongside traditional real-time and batch EDI processes, we enable both healthcare technology businesses and established players to exchange mission-critical transactions. Our clearinghouse product and customer-first approach have set us apart. Stedi was ranked by Ramp as one of the fastest-growing SaaS vendors.

We have lightning in a bottle: engineers and designers shipping products week in and week out; a lean business team supporting the company’s infrastructure; passion for automation and eliminating toil; $142 million in funding from top investors like Stripe, Addition, USV, Bloomberg Beta, First Round Capital, and more. What we’re looking for

Stedi is looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a feature team responsible for building highly scalable, resilient, modern APIs, allowing healthcare technology companies and traditional healthcare IT organizations to perform essential transactions for millions of patients each month.

This role offers the opportunity to lead a team of talented engineers, shape the future of a mission-critical part of healthcare infrastructure, and help build the foundational technology that powers modern healthcare systems.

How we build

  • We use AWS exclusively for our customer-facing backend infrastructure. We use tools like GitHub, Stripe, and PagerDuty, but all of our application work happens on AWS.

  • We use serverless technologies almost exclusively: Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, Aurora Serverless, and more. We don’t run a single server.

  • We use CDK (TypeScript) to define infrastructure as code.

  • We write the majority of our API backends and EDI parsing engine in Rust.

What you'll do

  • Lead a high-performing team to new heights by setting an ambitious pace with rigorous quality expectations.

  • Manage daily engineering workflows, monitoring timelines and resources to ensure projects are executed efficiently and to a high standard.

  • Align engineering deliverables with customer needs, partnering closely with Product and Customer Operations to quickly resolve high-priority issues and ensure timely feature delivery.

  • Increase accountability across the team by setting clear performance expectations and regularly reviewing progress to ensure high standards are consistently met.

  • Identify and implement process enhancements to increase operational efficiency, organizing design reviews, post-mortems, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Coordinate operational readiness for incidents and compliance requirements. Oversee run-books, game-day simulations, and ensure security practices are maintained.

  • Mentor engineers, provide guidance, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of technical excellence.

Who you are

  • 5+ years of engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in a management role.

  • 2+ years working with AWS services.

  • Exceptional written communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and clearly convey complex ideas and technical information.

  • Proven experience managing and fostering collaboration in a remote-first environment, ensuring team alignment and cohesion.

  • A commitment to cultivating a high-performing team.

  • High bandwidth with the ability to pay thoughtful attention to many areas simultaneously.

  • Ability to context switch throughout the course of the day or week as priorities shift.

  • Philosophical alignment with the Stedi Standards.
