About this Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) role at PathAI
PathAI's mission is to improve patient outcomes with AI-powered pathology.
PathAI is transforming traditional pathology methods into powerful, new technologies. These innovations in pathology can help accelerate drug development, improve confidence in the accuracy of diagnosis, and get life-saving therapies to patients more quickly. At PathAI, you'll work with a diverse and talented team of people, who are dedicated to solving complex problems and making a huge impact.
We are seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our Engineering team. In this position, you will help build and maintain the automated testing infrastructure that underpins the reliability of PathAI's software platform. You will partner closely with software engineers, product managers, and QA leads to design test strategies, write automation code, review pull requests, and debug complex failures — all in service of delivering software that clinicians and patients can depend on.
In addition, you will actively contribute to expanding and optimizing our testing infrastructure. As PathAI's platform grows, so does the complexity of our testing needs — you will help scale our automation capabilities by contributing to test environments, cloud infrastructure, and the deployment pipelines that keep quality high across multiple services and teams. This includes hands-on work with AWS and Kubernetes to provision, manage, and observe test environments, and a focus on making our toolset faster, more reliable, and easier for the whole engineering team to use.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their SDET career who is eager to learn, grow quickly, and make a real impact in healthcare technology.
The Opportunity
- You will design, implement, and maintain automated test suites using modern automation frameworks across UI, API, and integration layers.
- You will participate actively in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to raise the overall quality bar.
- You will work with engineers and business stakeholders to understand new features and translate requirements into comprehensive test plans.
- You will perform manual testing as needed to support product verification and user acceptance testing.
- You will investigate and debug test failures, production incidents, and flaky tests; communicate findings clearly to the broader team.
- You will contribute to CI/CD pipelines to ensure automated tests run reliably on every build.
- You will help build and maintain the cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes) that supports test environments and scales our test toolset across the platform.
- You will document test strategies, coverage gaps, and known issues in a clear and accessible way.
- You will collaborate cross-functionally with a remote-friendly, distributed team, managing your own priorities and deliverables independently.
Who You Are:
(Required)
- You have a BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or closely related field.
- You have 1–2 years of hands-on experience writing and maintaining automated tests using frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or similar.
- You have a demonstrated level of proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, TypeScript, or equivalent) with clean, readable coding habits.
- You have a demonstrated ability to perform and benefit from code reviews — both giving actionable feedback and incorporating it constructively.
- You have demonstrated debugging skills: ability to isolate root causes across multiple layers of a system (frontend, backend, infrastructure, data).
- You have demonstrated working knowledge of AWS (e.g., EC2, S3, ECS, Lambda) and experience working in or alongside containerized environments.
- You have a solid level of familiarity with Kubernetes for deploying, managing, or observing services in test or staging environments.
- You have demonstrated experience working in a team environment with excellent written and verbal communication skills; you are comfortable asking clarifying questions and surfacing blockers
Preferred:
- You have a background in healthcare, life sciences, or other regulated industry software development.
- You have experience integrating test automation into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab, CircleCI, or similar).
- You have exposure to performance, load, or security testing practices.
- You have a genuine desire to learn — you seek out feedback, read documentation thoroughly, and adapt to new tools and processes quickly.
- You have strong analytical and critical thinking skills with attention to detail; you have the ability to manage multiple projects and drive results in a fast-paced environment
