Brief Introduction to the team:
Expedia Global Payments (EGP) is hiring engineers to build and evolve the core platform of our globally distributed payment system. We process over $100B annually in more than 35 currencies. Our priorities are high availability, lower payment-processing costs, and better experiences for travelers and partners (hotels, airlines, and more).

You will help build the payment experience within our Unified Payment Module, which supports complex payment scenarios. Our goal is to give travelers the simplest, most reliable way to pay and to make these capabilities easy for partners to adopt—seamlessly integrating into any checkout with an adaptive, dynamic feature set.

Today, the unified Payment Module powers our Modern Checkout, EGP Advertising, EGP Private label solution. It:
- Manages multiple forms of payment—Credit cards, Affirm, Apple Pay, Naver Pay, PayPal, Google Pay, loaclised payments, gift cards, and loyalty programs.
- Determines which payment options are eligible for each checkout context.

We are expanding the payment experience to support additional lines of business—Air, Cars, Cruises, Activities—and more points of sale worldwide within unified payment module.

In this role, you will:

• Build and maintain backend services and platform capabilities within Expedia Group’s Payments domain using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and AWS.

• Design and implement reliable service-to-service communication and distributed-system capabilities, including gRPC integrations and NoSQL data solutions.

• Apply computer science fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, low-level design, API design, and data modeling to deliver scalable backend solutions.

• Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to clarify requirements, evaluate trade-offs, resolve ambiguous technical problems, and deliver practical outcomes.

• Take ownership of backend services and contribute across technical domains, including adapting to Kotlin-based development environments as needed.

• Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including applying AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows to enhance engineering productivity and delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.

• 2+ years of relevant professional experience.

• Experience building backend services with Java, Spring Boot, microservices, AWS, distributed systems, and service-to-service communication.

• Proficiency in coding, data structures and algorithms, low-level design, API design, and data modeling, with experience owning backend services or capabilities.

• Knowledge of NoSQL databases, preferably DynamoDB, along with clear communication and collaborative problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience developing backend systems in a product-focused technology organization, with demonstrated ownership of services operating at meaningful scale.

• Experience with Kotlin or the ability to work effectively across Java- and Kotlin-based backend environments.

• Strong practical experience with gRPC, distributed-system design, DynamoDB, and scalable microservice architectures.

• Demonstrated operational excellence through reliable delivery, thoughtful trade-off analysis, and data-informed improvements to backend services.

• Hands-on experience using AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows to accelerate software engineering, improve delivery outcomes, or enhance backend products.
