Simulation Program Manager, Standardized Patients - School of Medicine

The Program Manager – Standardized Patients, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of standardized patient activities and ambulatory care spaces within the BYU School of Medicine, under the direction of the Director of Simulation. This role ensures high-quality, safe, and educationally sound standardized patient and acute care simulation experiences supporting all phases of the medical curriculum. This position plays an important part in supporting the school’s mission to “provide a spiritually grounded and scientifically rigorous education for physicians who will minister to God’s children throughout the world as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ.” 

This position is important to the success of the BYU School of Medicine, a newly established organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations.

What you'll be doing in this position

1. Standardized Patient Program Operations

  • Oversee daily operations of the Standardized Patient (SP) Program including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of SPs.

2. Simulation Space and Equipment Oversight

  • Maintain readiness and functionality of ambulatory care rooms, audiovisual systems, computers, task trainers, and VR equipment.

3. Curriculum and Faculty Collaboration

  • Collaborate with faculty across all phases of the curriculum to design, create, implement, and assess SP-based and acute care simulation experiences.

4. Scheduling and Coordination

  • Manage SP and simulation schedules including OSCEs, skills labs, and courses while preventing conflicts and optimize utilization.

5. Staff Supervision and Training

  • Supervise SP staff and student employees; conduct training, orientation, and performance reviews.

6. Budgeting, Compliance, and Safety

  • Assist with SP budget oversight.
  • Assist with accreditation readiness, data collection and analysis, learner confidentiality, and safety compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What qualifies you for this role

Education/Experience

Minimum Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least 2 years of healthcare simulation or standardized patient program experience OR 6 years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to obtain CHSOS or CHSE certification within three years of hire.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline;
  • 5+ years of progressive responsibility in SP or healthcare simulation programs.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

Required:   

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to recruit and train standardized patients
  • Organizational and scheduling expertise
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
  • Basic technical aptitude
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

       

Preferred:

  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) or Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE)

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
