Assignments could include:
- Leading safety engineering and assurance across weapon, munition, explosives, system and integrated-platform levels.
- Shaping the safety assessment and assurance of conventional and novel weapon integration, including Directed Energy Weapons, across land, air and maritime platforms.
- Providing technical leadership for trials safety, test and evaluation, verification and validation, qualification and introduction into service.
- Leading explosives safety and ordnance assurance across storage, transport, handling, operation, maintenance, disposal and other through-life activities.
Your role
- You will lead proportionate WOME safety engineering and assurance across conventional, novel and complex defence projects. You will provide technical direction and trusted advice, develop robust safety arguments and evidence strategies, assure outputs and help clients make informed decisions across the capability lifecycle.
- Lead WOME safety work packages, balancing technical quality, schedule, cost and client priorities.
- Lead the development, maintenance and assurance of WOME safety cases, safety assessments, safety management plans, hazard logs and supporting evidence.
- Provide technical direction on hazard identification, risk assessment, safety requirements and the demonstration that risks are reduced to a tolerable level.
- Shape evidence strategies supporting acquisition, integration, trials, qualification, acceptance, introduction into service and continued operation.
- Advise clients, operators, designers, delivery partners, suppliers, trials organisations and assurance authorities on proportionate WOME safety solutions.
- Lead or support safety working groups, hazard reviews, assurance reviews and multidisciplinary engineering decisions.
- Review and assure technical outputs, guide teams and share knowledge with colleagues.
- Help develop future work by understanding emerging client needs, strengthening relationships and supporting follow-on activity where appropriate.
About you
Essential experience and attributes
- Substantial experience delivering WOME safety engineering, explosives safety, ordnance assurance or a closely related safety discipline in a defence environment.
- Experience leading safety cases, safety assessments, hazard-management activities or complex safety work packages.
- Sound knowledge of systems engineering and how safety evidence supports decisions across the capability lifecycle, with the technical judgement to develop proportionate, defensible solutions where information is incomplete or evolving.
- Confident client-facing communication, stakeholder management and production of high-quality technical deliverables.
- A relevant technical qualification or demonstrable equivalent professional experience from the Armed Forces, MOD or industry.
Desirable experience
- Strong experience applying safety-case, hazard-analysis or assurance techniques such as Claims, Arguments and Evidence, Goal Structuring Notation, ALARP demonstration, HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA/FMECA, FTA, ETA or Bow Tie analysis.
- Detailed knowledge of current Defence Safety Authority OME Regulations, related Defence Codes of Practice and relevant legislative requirements, including the Explosives Regulations 2014 and the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations.
- Knowledge of relevant general and WOME-related Defence Standards, NATO Standardization Agreements, Allied Ordnance Publications and United States Military Standards, including Def Stan 00-056, 00-035, 00-101, 07-085, 59-114 and 59-411.
- Experience leading WOME safety management, trials safety, qualification, storage, transport, handling, operation, maintenance or disposal activities.
- Experience using digital safety, requirements or risk-management tools.
- Experience helping to shape future requirements or activities, for example by identifying emerging needs, developing options, supporting continuation or follow-on work, or contributing to proposals or bids.
- Professional registration or active progress towards IEng or CEng, and membership of a relevant institution such as IExpE, IET, SaRS, IMechE or RAeS.
