About this Senior Software Engineer, Care Automation role at Toast

The Care Automation team builds the systems and automations that power how Toast supports its customers. Our work connects the platforms, workflows, and integrations that our Customer Care Agents rely on every day to resolve issues quickly and deliver a great customer experience.
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join this team and help shape the future of how these teams operate. You will contribute to building a strong technical foundation that will carry Toast through the next decade and beyond.
In this role, you will design, build, and own backend services and integrations spanning Salesforce, billing systems, identity verification, and AI-enabled case management workflows. You will partner closely with Salesforce developers, operations stakeholders, and AI engineers to translate complex business processes into reliable, maintainable automation.
A day in the life (Responsibilities)
- Design, build, and own backend services and APIs that power workflows for Customer Care Agents and the broader Toast team
- Build and maintain integrations across a complex ecosystem of internal and external systems, including Salesforce, billing middleware, document management, and iPaaS workflow automation platforms
- Write automated tests and participate in code reviews to maintain code quality and system reliability
- Monitor feature rollouts, respond to incidents, and iterate based on performance data and customer feedback
- Partner with product, design, and cross-functional teams to define requirements and deliver on shared goals
- Leverage cutting edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building - contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.
What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)
- 5+ years delivering production backend systems at scale
- Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented language
- Familiarity with API lifecycle management, including versioning, documentation, and deprecation
- Strong understanding of query languages, data modeling, and data distribution
- Experience working with microservices and event-driven architectures
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Bonus Ingredients (Nice to Have)
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs in production environments
- Familiarity with Workato or a similar iPaaS platform
- Prior work with Salesforce or other CRM platforms
- Comfort working with React and GraphQL

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.
